Converting old 35mm photos to digital

I am looking to purchase a digital photo converter to convert my old 35mm photos onto my Mac. Looking for advice on a good converter or way to go about this task.

Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Semper Fi and welcome to Discussions.

What you need is a scanner. Some have attachments so you can scan your 35 mm negatives. If you just want to scan printed photos a simple scanner will work fine.
The HP scanners are worth checking out. They come with software the lets you scan several photos at once and they are automatically separated into individual photo files.

I don't know of any converter that is Mac friendly. I can inderstand the appeal of a simple to operate dedicated appliance. Scanning old shoes boxes full of pictures is tedious at best. I've managed to avoid gettng started on this for years with little guilt.

That said, I don't see any real advantage with the converter. Online reviews are not very good anyway. This unit may already be discontinued.

The new line of both Epson and HP photo scanners have come a long way in making archiving a lot easier. The scanning is fast, the Mac software is very good for correctng the scanned image, and I think both companies have an option to scan to iPhoto.

I use an HP scanner which has that option but don't use it. I prefer to scan directly to desktop folders I create. I can organize easier that way, check the scans in Preview and see which ones I want to send to Photoshop first before importing folders into iPhoto.

Great news. I was afraid I would have to beg you to do that 😉
The scanner can also handle any size photo simply. You can even scan anything else you want.

Both the Epson and HP software handle the import to iPhoto about the same way - creating files on the hard drive first to be imported into iPhoto. iPhoto 6 doesn't have a direct scan connection. The problem would be that every scan, like every import, would create a new film roll.

That's why I use desktop folders as a scan destination, so I can group them into folders and import by folder to a new film roll. The scanner does basically the same thing allowing you import a batch into one film roll
