MacBook Pro screen blinks

My new MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes now. I've only noticed it when I've switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor. I don't recall seeing any blinks when using the discrete 9600M GPU. Usually it is only the top half or so of the display that blinks or flickers for a split second. Anyone else having the same problem?

MacBook Pro (Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.5), tv, iPhone, iPod Touch, et al

Hi
kongnator,

Here the same.

It flickers at 2b and 4b...

Do u think we 'll get a patch or 10.5.7 will fix this ?

I hope it is not a hardware problem ... otherwise it will mean a lot of returns of MacBook Pro and many problems with Apple, lost off time, because in my case, it is already the fifth machine that I change, with the same problem ...

hey hotplug..

i am not sure if it is hardware or not.. i also had this on 4 machines (all 9c84 screesn) everytime i called up apple they just said ok, sorry, we send a new unit..

but it kept coming back with the same problem.. 😟

i was hoping with the new 2.66 and 2.96 this might be solved, but you are proof it isnt, it is really frustrating, i do music production and stare on the screen for many hours and i get headaches (the software i use has a greyish background which makes the flicker quite visible)

i m not sure what to do, whether return the machine alltogether and take it from there (back to windows.. arghh.. dont wanna do that)

i have done some research, and i come up with different articles saying that nvidia are the ones to blame for the problem.. check out this article:

cheers

kongnator,

Thanks for the links, but one is for the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors.

We have NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT ...

I do not have installed Bootcamp ...

Apple give me a ticket number and say we have to wait for 10.5.7 update !

All they say is " wait", we are sorry, Engineers are working on the issue.

I am very concerned about the following events will flicker problem, and I advice you to keep a PDF copy of this thread, in case we would share our machine if the problem proved to be a hardware problem.

After all, if it is a known problem with NVIDIA chips, Apple should change our machines for machines 100% functional.

I am very worried and I lose my time with this story.

I hope we will have a positive return from Apple at the height of what should be the quality of these machines so expensive

I have a 00009C83 monitor/
MBP is from March 2009 (Shangai)

yes i know exactly what you mean, ordered mine 2 months ago and since then i keep sending back every machine, no time for work and no time to install everything again and again.. i am waiting for apple to contact me back. i asked them to give me a (if problem solved) 2.66, if not i want my money back. i ve lost enough time and nerves on this issue, they have to show some goodwill now to keep me as a (happy) customer..

hotplug,

you know the worst part is that SO MANY people don't even see or care about that flicker, or believe it is normal.. how can you spend 2000 euros for a computer and not expect it to be without any of these issues..

a dell for 500 euros, or an acer... OK, but not a macbook, especially NOT a PRO..

it ridiculous to release products if they should still be in test phase..

Yes I have exactly the same problem.

The screen "flutters" especially when the brightness is not at 100%. I have also noticed the brightness drifts of it's own accord (and no, it's not the usual ambient adjustment)

Also, I have started to have a high pitched whine from under the keyboard. When the whine starts, the screen flutters. Rather oddly, it seems to get worse when I am scrolling in Safari or Mail.

The MBP is still in it's 14 days time window to it'll be returned to Apple and I've ordered a replacement. It's a real shame as the rest of the machine is lovely.

I agree 100%, kongnator

I will try to give back again this machine tomorow.

I never buy ordinary RevA.

I know some people around me, they buy also this MBP.
I have shown to them yesterday evening the issue.

This is easily appears between 1 and 5 brightness on the 2 cards

They saw that there was a flicker problem but did not understand why it was not all the time

They want to return their machine now.

Hi Hotplug,

Sure:

If the one Apple are shipping me now doesn't correct the issue, I'll be in the same boat as you. Will probably end up reverting to my old MBP and wait until RevB comes out.

thats really too bad, i m really disappointed, was hoping these new models (2.66/2.96) were different than mine and i could exchange for one of them.. 😟

sorry for you too then, seems were all in the same boat.. i will hear from apple tmrw, i m excited to see what they can propose.. i had a long conversation with the support line and told them all my story of how i switched from a PC and how my 4 defective machines have literally brought down my enthusiasm about apple..

i will keep this post updated and tell you what happens tmrw. maybe i will just get a whitebook for now or a mac mini.. then wait for the next revision or go back to pc alltogether..

Sure - I think it's going to be an exact replacement of this one. I'll post the new one when it arrives (should be Monday).

BTW - something that people are talking about on the MacBook Air forums are the display models. It might be worth checking which ones we all have.

Go to system preferences -> Displays -> Color -> Open Profile
Scroll down to mmod (option 13). Click it and you'll get a list of data.

My Model ID is 00009C84
