Just installed "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.8" and no flicker with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 so far.
I can not express how unbelieveble it is that Apple took 39 months to fix this issue. I don't know if it's more amazing that they took so long, or that they actually fixed it.
At this point the thread has 1497 comments and 187,381 views.
Anyone Apple Hardware Test after the update to make sure that the update does not cause hardware issues?
Here's the big question
Should we go to better battery life mode before installing the update or does it not matter?
I didn't switch to 9400 before updating and it made no difference. The firmware installed and flicker is gone on 9400. So far 🙂
I have a MacBook Pro 5,1 that I purchased in March 2009. I'm running 10.5.8, had a successful install and no re-blinking . . . yet! I had done nothing about the problem but was getting anxious because my Appplecare runs out real soon. Will post if I get more blinks.
It will be amazing if it works after all these posts and all the effort directed at the logic boards.
After several hours, Mr. Blinks is finally gone. Just like the old days when I first got MBP 10.5.6 I believe. So looks like Apple finally fixed it with 10.7.3 version. Glitch must have been a firmware incompatibility with 10.6.
My eyes is full with tears of joy! MBP5,1 (late 2008) with no more Mr. Blinks too here yay!
Update was using 9600 card. The update process after the restart was mini-heart attack moment. Loud sound and the sleep light was blinking crazy before went to blank black screen for several seconds. I thought this baby was going to explode.
So happy! I finally have the chance to ditch the send-feedback bookmark to complain about this to Apple once per 3 days 😉
Does anyobody experienced any issue updating with SL 10.6.8? Right now i've seen only people running 10.7.3 to complete the update.
That's just great. Great that it tooks only 3.5 years!! to finally release this update. Sad story is that I just bought a new iMac only because of that super annoying flickering. And just after 5 days - EFI update comes. Really sad day for me.
Very low marks to Apple for the belated firmware fix, which comes far too late for me, since I just had a logicboard replacement to fix the blinking-screen problem [working ok so far]. Although Apple did eventually do this for free, it cost a fair bit in time, effort, travel and phone calls before this happened -- and several visits to the local reseller, each time to be told they couldn't reproduce the problem.
So now I'm afraid to install the firmware fix in case it breaks my repair…
A big raspberry to Apple.
It's amazing it took this long. My problem has not been very severe -- little did I know what I was asking when I asked the dealer, 'What I want to know is will the screen crash.' The blink has been intermittent and not too bothersome in itself. I joined this discussion and have been amazed at the variety and persistence of the problem and the variety of unsuccessful fixes (I had just had a logic board replaced for other reasons when I asked about the blink which had survived the change of logic board -- so I'm not surprised when that fix doesn't work. I almost resigned from the discussion because it was all so bleak, and myh Applecare is gone on this -- when my inbox went crazy with comment, I finally looked to see what was going on -- and wow, a firmware fix! That said, I still don't know if the problem is gone now that I've installed the fix. I will report if it does not fix it!
Much panic about firmware fix 2.7. From CNET news, note the number:
After releasing these updates, Apple has issued another update for the MacBook Pro (version 2.7 was released on Saturday; this is version 2.8), which addresses a problem in which 15-inch models from late 2008 developed flickering displays. This fix is only applicable to the 2008 model.Read more: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57387094-263/macbook-pro-efi-update-fixes-f lickering/#ixzz1nlYXGWs4
AT LAST !!
This EFI firmware has fixed my mackbook pro from flickering !
It now is flicker free on the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M setting.
I was starting to think that this was never going to be fixed.
Thankyou !
Yes I updated successfully my MBP 15" late 2008 running 10.6.8. Definitely stopped Mr. Blinks!
Better late then never I guess ?
In my case, there are no more flickerings since I had the logic board replaced, so I actually feel too paranoid to even install this EFI firmware update… Too afraid it would cripple the computer or create the problem instead of solving it…
