Apple change my computer
This problem was resolved by the EFI update, but now I've got a new problem. I upgraded to Mountain Lion and am now getting the NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception kernel panic. I wonder if this is related to the EFI update and an incompatibility with Mountain Lion. Has anybody else started experiencing this issue after upgrading to Mountain Lion?
No such problem on my late 2008 machine.
Yes. My late 2008 seems to have fixed itself under mountain lion. No issues so far.
My late 2008 MBP's screen flickers slighty, but notably, every few seconds with either the 9400m and the 9600gt enabled.
I'm on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and this started happening a few days ago..
From this thread and elsewhere on the internet, this shouldn't be happing since it should be a software related issue.
Anyone else experiencing this under ML?
also, since the mbp is from februari 2009 i've got no more applecare; this means i'm f'ed either way right?
Reinstall Mountain lion from scratch install all updates and firmwares via Software Update... use gfxCardstatus (google) to switch cards... test it a while.
If problem persists... hardware issue... (heat has caused the nvidia chip to unsolder itself from the mainboard) no fix unless you take it to a prof reballing shop.
thanks for the quick reply,
as it would happen my SSD failed a few days ago so installed new hard drive and Lion then update to ML and updated that too.
I use gfxcardstatus aswell. you think i should reinstall from ML not from Lion?
i've just tried installing it but i'm not allowed to,
is there a way to check wether it's installed?
Click the apple logo in the top left... then About this mac... then more information... then system report...
In this screen there should be SMC version: 1.41.f2
What does yours say?
it says 1.41f2
probably a hardware failure then?
99% sure it's a hardware problem...

You should have a prof repair shop look at it... not the apple "genius" type but laptop repair shops...
Both chips need resoldering... it will take a day to do it... I'm from eastern europe, we have this HUGE technical student campus here... they can fix anything... about three big shops... costs less than 50$ to do.
(took a hdd to them once... the electronics were fried, they kept it for 8 months to find a close serial number match while searching through all the junk they had on hand... rewired it... it's been working for a year now... recoverd all the data too)
Make sure they know what they are doing, parts cost less than 5$ to fix quality reflux and stuff plus some resin... the rest is up to a magical set of hands and the right equipment.
thanks alot for answering my questions,
it seems to only happen when my harddrive is writing and thus spiking power.
With my SSD this did not happen...
I will get it looked at asap before it's too late.
----edit----
also, external screen (1920*1080) works fine (mirror or screen extension), kinda weird the mbp screen flickers and the big screen doesnt.
all pointing toward power issue's..
I don't think they are related.
You mean it never displayed this problem while using ssd?
Normally does it happen while on battery or AC or both?!
OMG, i've found the solution to my problem...
it was the AC which was malfunctioning. Switching the AC adapter made the flickering go away..
Thanks alot for thinking with me, now I can sleep well tonight!
