MacBook Pro screen blinks

My new MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes now. I've only noticed it when I've switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor. I don't recall seeing any blinks when using the discrete 9600M GPU. Usually it is only the top half or so of the display that blinks or flickers for a split second. Anyone else having the same problem?

MacBook Pro (Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.5), tv, iPhone, iPod Touch, et al

I installed Leopard onto an external hard drive. I booted from it. I ran it for 5 hours without any issues with flickering. When Im on Snow leopard, I get the issue several times an hour. I'm really beginning to think that some of us are having software issues instead of hardware. Not everyone, mind you. But some of us. We all seem to have the same blinking result in any case. Perhaps the issue is there due to hardware, but Snow Leopard just brings the problem out so much more.

Dont install Tiger, its before the machine came out and wont have the drivers.

Look ive posted this before, its hardware. How can I tell...

I had a blinking MacBook Pro 17" like you all, it also had a SSD Hard Drive in which I installed myself. It flickered on Leopard and Snow Leopard. I took it back and Apple gave me a new one (exact same spec).

Ive had the new one for 6+ months and no flickering at all. The OS is the same EXACT OS as I swapped the drives, I DID NOT do a fresh install.

So I kept the OS that under 1 machine saw flickering but was fine under the other new machine. Therefore you can count out software as the software works 100% in the new machine.

Take it back, call AppleCare, read previous posts but dont just sit there hoping for an update.

Hello,
I do agree with this point of view. I'm not able to re-install Leopard on my MBP these days, but I'm absolutely sure the blinking issue has begun since I made the upgrade to Snow Leopard (directly to 10.6.2), at the end of november (2009). Before that, I never experienced blinking (or flickering) issue. I think (I hope...) it's (at least for some of us) merely a software issue, related, I guess, to an incorrect refreshing rate, or something like that (something that could be fixed by a graphic drivers update, thanks to... 10.6.3 ?).

Regards.

Yes, I see what you mean. And I did actually read the posts (and the news articles) you are talking about before writing mine. But :

1. Certainly, the problem may have occured under Leopard. It doesn't necessarily imply it's a hardware issue. It may have been a graphic driver issue that a 10.5.x update could have fixed (some posts on this thread suggest that kind of interpretation, which may be taken in account, although I absolutely don't know if it's the good one). And maybe the issue comes back today because of the graphic drivers and/or graphic card(s) firmware currently used in SL 10.6.2.

2. As far as I'm concerned by this issue (and certainly I won't talk for the other subscribers to this thread), all I can say is that I never experienced it when I was running Leopard (and, from december 2008 to december 2009, I used my MBP in a large variety of ways).

3. I hope this can soon be fixed by a software update... But it's possible I am unreasonably optimistic 😟

I too have this intermittent flicker issue. It began after the required reboot following installation of the iTunes 9.0.3 update. It seems to occur most reliably when the computer is first turned on and it goes away after I log in. Could it be that it is just a coincidence that it happened right after the iTunes update and totally unrelated to that update.

I have a 15-inch unibody from late 2008. I will call AppleCare tomorrow. Very aggravating! I also have one of the new 27" i7 iMacs with the yellow tinge issue (that will require replacement of the display) AND the screen on my 3G iPhone has developed strange grey lines (the screen is trash now). I no longer have confidence in Apple products.
