The issue will still reamin though. The best apple can do is replace the logic board and on-board graphics, which others have done, but still experience the issue. The best you can hope for is to have it "fixed" 3 times and request a new unit.
The guy I talked to actually told me they have this issue on file. He told me to take it to an actual apple store, and they can try and fix it there. If they can't, they'd send it off to the depot to get repaired. He also said that when I get my laptop back and the problem continues, then he would replace my laptop to keep me happy. I told him about the customer service I had recieved about this issue, and it was BAD, and he pretty much said that I'd get a new machine if the repair didn't work.
Do it, you have apple care so do it!
The rest of us without apple care, we can't do much.
Same issue here, after snow leopard installation and over a year dealing with the problem I decided to take it to apple before my applecare expire. Today they said to me that they made a test and the logic board is damage so it will be replaced this week. I will let know soonā¦ BTW thanks God that I bought the applecare; those guys that are thinking about it, DO IT!!!
Well, I woke up to a surprise this morning. I came to my computer in my tv room as usual, and the light on the front of it was on, indicating my computer was still on. I moved my mouse. Screen was still black. Pressed a few keys. Screen was STILL black. Ok, because of an issue I have with my mac and its sleep mode, I have it to never go into sleep mode. Only the harddrive will go into a sleep when it can. I had to do a hard reset to be able to see my screen. What. The. ****. This was a new trick my laptop hasn't tried on me before, and its thrown a few things my way.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm on the 9600 card.

What does this have to do with the blinking of the screen, the subject of this topic? Please do not polute this thread with non-related problems.
If you have another problem, please make a new topic.
I had the screen flicker problem on my MacBook Pro late 2008 model. At first it was very infrequent and I hardly noticed it, but the flicker gradually got worse and more frequent. It was happening apparently randomly. At least, I couldn't identify a certain activity or program that was causing it to happen.
After reading about this issue in the communities, I took it to Apple and tried to explain. They replaced the display. This did not fix the problem, so I switched to using the "better performance" option (9600 GPU), and the flicker never occured under this setting. I was happy with that until my battery completely died 5 months later. I was surpised especially because I usually use the machine on the power supply anyway. Battery should not have been drained.
I took it back to Apple (I have Apple Care). This time I had made a video of the flicker problem that happens on the 9400 GPU setting and showed it to them. They had it for 2 weeks, replaced the logic board and the battery. I've had it back for 3 days now and been using it every day on the 9400 GPU with no flicker problems. So, a new logic board appears to have fixed the problem. I will report back if there are any further issues.
My macbook pro unibody late 2008 have a black screen don't boot i can hear the hard drive and fan but nothing on the screen...
Ok! Thanks for sharing!
Agreed. Earlier this month, I had my MBP repaired again. After one week, I haven't seen a single flicker. I think Apple finally figured out what's causing it. Please have your MBP repaired, so they'll know about it. It will only take less than a week.
Yes, I will bring my laptop inš. I do not have AppleCare and I am living in a country where we don't have official Apple stores, only resellers. I think they will be happy to repair my laptop for ā¬500-1000 for a problem a did not create.
The only thing I do no get; when my MacBook Pro is connected to my Apple Led Cinema I do not have the screen blinking, only when using my build-in 15" Laptopscreen. In both cases the 9400m is used.
Here you have the new firmware update for Apple Cinema Display 24-inch. It works for me very well.

My MBP allowed me to install this update only when I was in single-monitor mode with display only on my ACD (laptops' lid must be closed).
It is strange, why Apple released this backdoor fix without any official announcement...
I am sorry, but wat does your firmware update have to do with the screen flickering of the MacBook pro built-in 15" screen? It is totally off-topic.
Well, my launch-day late 2008 unibody MBP 15" has been 'blinking' since day one. It wasn't much of an issue for me at the time as I was using it 99% of the time in clamshell with an external display. About a year ago I started using it as an actual laptop, which is when it really started to annoy me. I'd work around it my using the 9600m GT when it was plugged into power, but i also had the problem of it locking up when playing full-screen video for extended periods. I lived over 100 miles from the nearest Apple Store, so I had to live with it.
Now that I live near an Apple Store (two actually š), and my AppleCare still has a month left, I wanted to get it seen to so that I can sell it.
I went in last week and spoke to a Genius, and he arranged for a logic board replacement. Result, I thought.
No dice. It still blinks, plus they've managed to kill my AirPort, BT and iSight.
So, back to the Apple Store I go, after reading this entire thread (yes, really), I don't hold out much hope.
