Q: MacBook Pro screen blinks

My new MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes now. I've only noticed it when I've switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor. I don't recall seeing any blinks when using the discrete 9600M GPU. Usually it is only the top half or so of the display that blinks or flickers for a split second. Anyone else having the same problem?

MacBook Pro (Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.5), tv, iPhone, iPod Touch, et al

Is Apple even aware of this or are we just posting uselessly here and have to deal with this issue for everyone that is barely out of the 1 year warranty?

Unfortunately, the only way for Apple to "discover" a problem is from warranty service numbers. In my case, I can't really be without my MBP as I need it for school, so taking it in for repairs is not an option for me right now, unless it actually stops working or it becomes impossible to work with.

This is crap...I called apple and they said I am 1 month out of warranty and if it needed repairs I would have to pay for it, which is BS!!!
This is not a uncommon issue and should be addressed system wide!!!!

Apple support is aware of this thread as many of us have called them and referred to this thread. I would encourage everyone having a valid support contract (either warranty either Apple Care) to call them and refer to this thread as I did. The more support call they will receive, the more likely the problem will be visible.

    Thanks

My macbook pro's screen blinks randomly as well. It is tiring and frustrating to work with. Is this normal for such an expensive machine?

Well, add me to this sad list of MacBook Pro owners from late 2008. My screen started to "blacking" on the top 1/3 of the screen. That was when I first installed Snow Leopard. Now, the screen is almost completely blacked out when the issue occurs. Like many of us, I'm out of my warranty last November. I'm at the point that I have to completely ignore that I have a "better battery mode."

I had a 2.4ghz Late 2008. The problems started for me also. At first... I had screen blanking that I could replicate at times by bumping the machine. The logic board and memory was replaced. Then after the repair I began having the top third or the entire screen flash black as well as instances of white "static" on the screen. I brought it back and the display was replaced. This did not solve the problem. I brought it back one more time. The Lead Genius looked at the logs... went off for a few and decided that Apple would replace my machine. I ended up with a new late 2009 2.66 Unibody (I was going to receive the 2.53, but it lacked the dual graphics). I haven't had trouble with the new one yet and feel very fortunate. The new battery and better color gamut screen is also a nice addition. I sympathize with all of you and feel your pain. I was lucky. I hope for everyone Apple comes out with a fix. This problem and the time it has gone on is a real disappointment and was very much a frustration for me.

Add me to the list of those afflicted with the screen flicker. I have the unibody late-2008 Macbook Pro 2.4. The issue started one week ago and only occurs when using the Integrated NVIDIA 9400M video card. The issue resolves when switching to the NVIDIA 9600M GT card. It is worse when the mac is moved or when squeezing the the bottom of the computer. I have recorded a video of the flicker, which also includes a bizarre moment when, for a split second, it appeared PhotoBooth was activated, and I can see myself video recording the screen. I took it to an Apple store this past weekend and was told the issue is frequently seen, but since AppleCare was not purchased the fix will be out of pocket. They stated the logic board needs to be replaced. They can send it back to Apple for $330 or fix it in-house for $700+. It was also recommended to call and report the issue to AppleCare even if I decide not to have it fixed at this time.

I forgot to specify that the blinking occurs when using BOTH the Integrated NVIDIA 9400M video card AND when switching to the NVIDIA 9600M GT card!

I wrote MacWorld and TUAW about this widespread issue. I saw that users were having trouble with their Mac Pro's overheating and some audio issues. Maybe we can get Apple to really take a look at this major problem which only seems to be getting worse. Hopefully something will get done about this so that those of us without Apple Care will still get treated fairly since this is clearly an issue on Apple's part.

Even those without AppleCare should have their machines fixed, to be honest. This is a widespread problem that a lot of people are experiencing, it's just like the 27" iMac issues that are currently plaguing owners with problems. This blinking issue should be addressed in a recall, no less. It's Apple's lack of care for their customers by making defective products and selling them as good, that's just evil.

    I can only wish.

Purchased in late 2008... and am now out of warranty. Screen blinking of course only became a significant problem immediately after my warranty expired.

    I use my laptop 10-12hrs a day :-/ (sw dev / visual design)... *****.

** APPLE ** THIS LAPTOP IS NOT USABLE WITH THE SCREEN BLINKING!

In fact, it blinked 2x while writing this message.
