Q: MacBook Pro screen blinks

My new MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes now. I've only noticed it when I've switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor. I don't recall seeing any blinks when using the discrete 9600M GPU. Usually it is only the top half or so of the display that blinks or flickers for a split second. Anyone else having the same problem?

As I said before, my mac book pro was still under its year warranty with only a month to go. I'd had 2 logic boards and displays fitted since February. Then for some reason my hard drive died.

Now I have a brand new mac book pro and am very happy. I understand apple wouldnt give me a new machine immediately - which company would?

This is one good ending - I hope the rest of you get the same good treatment.

    @Alison Moss

I'm glad to hear your computer was ultimately replaced and that you got resolve. I cannot imagine how frustrating it must have been. It's good to hear that they stepped up and tried to resolve the problem for you.

I wish the same could be said for [my wife's Macbook|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11472415#11472415] that is falling apart.

Today is the day I gonna bring my macbook to apple care also for flickering issue. I hope everything will be ok wish me luck keep you guys posted.

I'll be with you in spirit amigo. Please post back your experience.

Ok I went to Apple care yesterday. And show them some video of my screen flicker. The first question the genius guys ask me is how did I caught it in video. I told him you don't know what I'm been thru just to catch it blink because it is so random. Then he do his test and some more test then suddenly when he was loging his report to his computer bam! the screen blink at him. He thought he just blink his eye too long. But I said no you did not I've seen it too. Then he suggest to change the whole display. Because he said whenever there is flicker usually it was the display. Ok I believe him he is the genius so they need to order the parts first. Well good luck I hope it is really the display problem. Because I read the whole thread people change their display, logic board even exchange to a new macbook pro but still display flicker. I hope everything works well I am glad to have a apple care but I expect my computer just to work. Going back and forth to Apple store is exhausting

ian_thomas wrote on 19th April in this thread that his colleague had the screen flashing problem in Entourage on a new MacBook Pro.

My new MacBook Pro 15" is less than a month old and this exact problem started two days ago; only in Entourage Web Services (13.04), screen flashes any time between 1-10 secs, repeatedly - looks like the screen is reloading itself. Like ian_thomas doesn't affect other programmes, email works but v difficult to keep looking at.

Tried creating another id, just the same.

Seems to be a bit different from the problems mentioned here. Laptop has Intel Core i7, Mac Os X 10.6.3 with all updates, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics.

Any ideas or resolution to this?

    Hey guys,
I've been having the same problems as the rest of you all. I have a 2.4 MBP 15" (1st gen unibody) and experience intermittent, but intense flickering on the top half of the screen, ONLY on the 9400 integrated chip. I only encountered this problem after taking in my MBP for repair on the audio port, which was stuck on optical out. After the repair (replaced logic board), the flickering began.

I took the "fixed but rebroken" machine into the Apple Store, where they assured me it was the hinge assembly, even though I pointed out and demonstrated that the integrated graphics chip was the problem. After letting them do their thing, I got back a repaired machine. They had simply replaced the clamshell around the display (a $625 item!!!) and the hinge assembly. Sure enough, after 5 mins of use, the screen had flickered. It almost seems worse.

Anyways, I called Apple today, voicing my displeasure at their failure to actually diagnose the problem or take note of my own diagnosis. The rep forwarded me to a senior consultant, who asked me some very specific question. This guy was obviously familiar with the issue, as he asked me questions about whether it was reproduced on the high-performance setting, etc. After our conversation, the rep agreed that it should be repaired under warranty (my warranty expired while it was getting repaired the 1st time for the audio port), since the problem didn't occur until I got the machine back.

I'm hoping this time that Apple will get it right and fix the issue. It sounds like you just need to get through the chain of command to someone who knows about this issue. Otherwise, it's diagnosed as something completely unrelated to the real problem -- the 9400 gfx chip.

Good luck to the rest of you, and I'll update everyone as to how this repair goes.

    Hi guys,
My 3 month old 15" C2D MBP just started doing this today. It appears that it isn't the backlighting that is flickering but the colouring of the display itself, flicking from its usual rich colour and tone to a bright, washed out look and back again. It does it both in OSX and in windows 7, on both the 9400M and the 9600GT graphics chips. When it first started I thought it was the LED backlights having a hissy fit, but after watching it for a few minutes I realised it wasn't the backlighting at all. Is this the same as what everyone else is talking about, or is this different.

ps. I tried to click on the link to the 'unanswered' thread, but it gives me- Error: you do not have permission to view the requested forum or category.

    Hi,

In reference of this thread ( http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.j...=0&tstart=0 ) which was marked as "answered" while it is not, I suggest everybody who wants this hardware relative problem to be covered by warranty against hidden defects to post a message here rather than on the other side.

Please Apple, could you extend conventional warranty about this problem ?

Let's hope that was only a mistake.
Apple, wake up! This is a HUGE design problem that is murdering our faith in your (otherwise great, but costly) product. This needs to be sorted out F A S T (it's been 1 year and a half...).

Hey guys, so I got my MBP back after the 3rd repair, and guess what: ITS STILL BROKEN!!

At this point I'm fed up with Apple. They need to either replace my MBP with a new one or a refurb of equal or better specs...one that doesn't flicker.

Above is a link to a youtube link to a video of my new 17" macbook pro corei7 flashing while using photoshop cs3. I have narrowed the problem to the switching routine in preferences. If i turn it off, problem goes away.

The flashing in your video is not the same thing. On your new MacBook Pro is flashing within the application window which points to a problem with the video stream. On computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M the flashing is within the display, so everything flashes, menu bar, Finder, Desktop, Applications.

Which is a relief, I would hate to think NVIDIA did not fix this in their new generation display cards.
