Q: MacBook Pro screen blinks

My new MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes now. I've only noticed it when I've switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor. I don't recall seeing any blinks when using the discrete 9600M GPU. Usually it is only the top half or so of the display that blinks or flickers for a split second. Anyone else having the same problem?

MacBook Pro (Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.5), tv, iPhone, iPod Touch, et al

it seems to help if you turn the auto dim off in the energy saver preference. i also turned off the auto adjust in the display preference. sometimes the screen auto adjusts to 100% brightness when used at nighttime, but does not adjusts back the next day, that's when it flickers the most.

this does not eliminate the blinking but seems to reduce it.

forgot to add to my last post that you'd need to restart after turning the auto dim/auto adjust off.

I just wanted to respond to this post as someone who is also affected by these random screen flicks. I've visited this exact thread several times as a guest user for any updates on this widespread issue. It wasn't until today, I decided to create a login - for the purpose of expressing my frustration as an affected user!

Most importantly, Apple's complete lack disregard for this topic and it's idle state regarding this issue have pushed me even further. Here's what blows my mind - this thread was originally started on -
    ("MacBook Pro screen blinks
    Posted: Nov 28, 2008 5:28 PM")....

With that said, I encourage everyone who feels the same to visit the http://www.consumerist.com and post your complaints regarding this very issue with links to this POST for other to see in the consumer world. If you're not aware of www.consumerist.com, it's a blog/social site that allows frustrated consumers to complain and inform others in their dealings with companies that do cruddy things, this being one of them!

Millions of people visit the site as do thousands of companies. No company on the planet wants to be mentioned on this site becuase it can create a lot of negative outlook on a companies reputation which is exactly what it's deisgned for.

Hit em where it hurts, their pockets. I'm sure if you do this, Apple will finally respond, just look what did when iPhone 4 laucned and the web was flooded with all that negative publicity.

    Good luck!

    Hi everyone!
Im having the same "mr. blinky" problem just like everyone else here, but my macbook pro also flash little white lines across the screen randomly. Sadly I don't have apple care anymore, so i am really hoping that Apple have some kind of replacement program like they did with the older macbook pros.

I took my MBP into an Apple store a few weeks ago to repair the superdrive, which had stopped reading discs.

While I was there, I told them about the flickering issue that I've been experiencing (and so has everyone else) while using the 9400M graphics card. I showed them this thread, the one on MacRumors, and YouTube videos demonstrating it as well.

They flat-out REFUSED to do anything to attempt to remedy it because they could not reproduce it in the store. REFUSED. Too bad, never heard of it, not our problem since we can't see it.

This was my first Mac I have ever bought. And, after the lack of willingness to even attempt to remedy this situation, coupled with the fact that none of the remedies even seem to work, +I will NOT be buying another Mac again+. This type of issue and Apple's continued, forced ignorance of it is disgusting on a computer that was this expensive.

Unless Apple comes clean, admits there is a problem, and provides a worthy solution, they have lost a customer over this.

I'm having the same problem. Not as bad as some but after paying so much for my MBP I expect better than to have this problem. Does anyone know if Apple has a fix for it?

That doesn't apply to the unibody models.

Why don't you ask Apple? It's pretty obvious that Apple is not publicly recognizing a problem with video on the unibody models (late 2008) and later. If you don't have AppleCare and your warranty has expired, you're probably out of luck. If you do have AppleCare, have AppleCare telephone support handle the problem -- not your local Apple Store. After 3 repairs, the policy is to replace the laptop.

    Hi people
    Refere to my post 21.sept
I changed my minidisplay-hdmi adapter to the one which is referred to on Apple web. That means Moshi.
It SOLVED my problem with the blinking immediately.
And; the only things that was changed was the adapter (not the cable, no new software update etc)
(this was on my MBP Mid 2010 unibody)

    Best regards, Lars

    Changed screen-the problem got worse
    Changed motherboard-the problem is solved!!
    No more blinking!!
One an a half year with 4 services.
    Fortunately, I had warranty.
Finaly the screen is that I paid for it to be.
Felt Apple did not take this problem seriously.
It helped when I filmed the blinking and let it out online, and also referring to this discussion.
Suddenly it sounded like they had heard about the blinking before, and came up with various resets you all have heard about before. Works for half an hour.
Now I will try to forget all about this blinking
This was my first Apple product.
