Q: MacBook Pro screen blinks

My new MacBook Pro display screen is blinking or flickering every few minutes now. I've only noticed it when I've switched to the integrated 9400M graphics processor. I don't recall seeing any blinks when using the discrete 9600M GPU. Usually it is only the top half or so of the display that blinks or flickers for a split second. Anyone else having the same problem?

MacBook Pro (Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.5), tv, iPhone, iPod Touch, et al

This is so pathetic of Apple. Sure not every single one of the MBP has this problem. But a small subset of users (us) has this. The only fix is a firmware update or replace logic board ( hit or miss ) or a new MBP. Most of us are out of warranty. When this POS shipped, it never had the blinking problem or the behavior didn't occur till the break in period. Downgrading doesn't help, once Mr. Blinky moves in, he doesn't move out.

so, still no fix to this problem and no words from apple?
Good job steve, you made the best-quality computers in the world.
    /sarcasm off.
I don't know the exact numbers but I guess more than a thousand people with macbook pros have blinking screens and can't do anything about it, is that really professional?

Ive also been visiting this thread for the past 6 months plus, hoping a resolution would be reached, I got excited yesterday when I saw this

    http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/15/nvidias-faulty-laptop-gpu-settlement-starts-p aying-out-file-yo/

Of course, this does not apply to our model, which I figured.

I called sometime in December to Apple support, my laptop is out of warranty. I figured they would do nothing and ignore my problem and that it exists, and I was right. The representative looked up my serial and explained to me my model has no defect, that it was only the previous model. I then stated at least 5 times, there is a 80+ long page on your site, referencing the many people with this model who have this issue. I was told that those threads are just "talk" u cant go by them. Really? 100's of bored people commenting on the same problem, from all the way back in 2008? uhhh ok. I even wanted to give her the URL,she did not want it. I said to her, i figured you would not do anything for my issue, but I wanted to call in and let you know I was effected by this issue, for awareness issues, and hopefully a later recall.

I don't get it, isn't there some contract for buyers involved that states that if the product contains faulty hardware when it is sold, the seller should reimburse regardless if there is a warranty?

We buy Apple for the quality of the products and the service, if this is the products and service I'm risking to get in the future, then I might as well buy a cheap Acer.

I just posted. Suppose their system is faulty too? I hate the "star" business and can't find the entry marked solution. Maybe it is just buggy.

We could move this entire discussion where no "faults" occur….

"Apple reserves the right to delete any Submission, or take action against any account, at any time, for any reason."

It does also say that the posting person is the only one who decides on the "solved" star, which I doubt.

I second moving the discussion, but to where?

Apparently we can not talk about certain things here. But at least they should have the decency to tell us why. But I guess it's too much to ask.

www.macserve.net I don't have a forum pkg but I do have MailMan as a listserv. I also have the Apple wiki system where we could use it as a listserv but that signup takes effort… mailman is automagic.

also getting the same problem. Sometimes, the computer would freeze and the screen would flicker really fast... Sometimes it just flickers every now and again. I wish apple would sort this out.

same here guys. Some of my posts got removed because they contained "unconstrictive complaints". Don't know how a complaint can be constructive though

Back in 2010 october 25 i've got my motherboardprocessorgraphics chip replaced
    ( http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12473957#12473957 )
two days ago ( 2-3 months later) the symptoms (blinking screen) came back.

this means either a problem in MAC OS X, or -and that's what i think- a hardware problem.
this also means that since i am quite uncertain about my macbook pro 's future, i will stop buying anything mac related (i said mac not apple) and that includes buying from the mac app store.
I will also start converting my files (personal and professional) into universal standards (for future compatibility) ...

as for the posts which might have been deleted (which i still have on my email box) they may be in contradiction with the terms of use of this forum

The fully constructive response to the above statement about contract with the supplier from dutchbb was deleted by the forum censors.

It was pointing to a place where you can register consumer product complaints.

If Apple wants to play hardball, it seems we have to do so too.

I suspect it is all an NVidia problem after searching the net. There is a class action lawsuit that is in a settlement phase (?) where some of the listers here might find resolution (ah puns do make my day).

    Story
    http://www.cultofmac.com/nvidia-settles-class-action-lawsuit-over-macbook-pro-gp us/61338

    Restitution:
    http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/

Note how many types of systems are impacted. This problem that we see on the unibody units is just an extension of this defective engineering that NVidia provided earlier it seems. In my mind, this is much more wide spread on this issue than the prior but unfortunately it is not impacting (in theory) Dell and HP and thus not getting attention.
