how to charge an old ipod

I've got an old ipod... its about 1 and a half years old and is a 15gb, it only connects to the computer via firewire.

Problem is I've lost all the cables and chargers so the ipod has gone 'dead' and I've no way to charge it...
I borrowed someones (new) ipod mini usb cable and usb ac adapter but nothing happens....just nothing.

Should this work and theres something wrong with the ipod or are the cables just not compatible?

And also... can I buy cables and charger for such an old ipod.
I checked the apple store and I can't see an obvious reason why a dock (for click wheel models) and a dock connector to firewre won't work!?!
