How to play .ogg files?

I have found several .ogg files on the web recently. They are mostly short audio files, I think... I usually find these when I am looking up the pronunciation of a name. I click on the link and a .ogg file downloads instead of playing. QuickTime doesn't seem to play it, either. Any ideas?

This is interesting. My copy of VLC (0.9.4) won't play those files either. Didn't try Ogg Drop. But I can confirm that you can play files from the site you referred to with [MPlayer for OS X|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/36331] (click the link in order to be taken to Versiontracker.com).

Hello Bob.

On Vorbis' [FAQ page|http://www.vorbis.com/faq/#what] (click the link) you can read
Ogg Vorbis is a new audio compression format. It is roughly comparable to other formats used to store and play digital music, such as MP3, VQF, AAC, and other digital audio formats. It is different from these other formats because it is completely free, open, and unpatented.

As McRoger already pointed out VLC plays ogg-files. But as stated at http://www.vorbis.com/setup_osx/ there's also
a QuickTime component available that allows iTunes to play ogg vorbis files.

It's called [Ogg Drop|http://www.nouturn.com/oggdrop> (click the link). On [Ogg Drop's Help Page|http://www.nouturn.com/oggdrop/help.php] the following is explicitly stated:
*QuickTime Component*
Any .oggs on your machine will automatically play in any QT enabled application, such as the QT player or iTunes. The tags that are embedded into each audio track (from Ogg Drop, for example), will also be readable with this component. Finally you can use iTunes with oggs just like you can mp3s. This new version now includes support for QuickTime 7.

Hope that helps.

Actually, I just now downloaded both VLC and Ogg Drop. I may be mistaken; but, it looks as if Ogg Drop is for converting files, not playing them, and VLC does not play the .ogg file that Safari Downloaded from http://www.i-want-baby.com/pronunciation/baby-boy-names-l.html

I think Apple should just add this file type to QuickTime.

Hello Bob.

Thanks for the reward. Back in my Linux days I dealt a lot with ogg files (instead of the proprietary mp3 format, which some distributions didn't and don't support out of the box). In your latest post you wrote
I may be mistaken; but, it looks as if Ogg Drop is for converting files, not playing them

I quote from [Ogg Drop's Help & Tips Page|http://www.nouturn.com/oggdrop/help.php]:
*Installation Overview*
Ogg Drop is now a stand-alone application, but does contain a separate QuickTime Component installer.

If you download the OggDropX.dmg file, you'll find that it contains the application and a "Component Installer.pkg". The component installer is what you'll want.
