iPhone 3G Microphone Problem?

Hi everyone!

Ive had my iPhone for around 3-4mths now and I've not had any issues at all with it - until now. I made several calls today and the people on the other end couldn't hear me properly. I initially put this down to poor network reception on their part or mine, but it quickly became apparent that it was down to the microphone in my iPhone.

Basically if i make a normal call on my iPhone the person in the other end hears my voice but incredibly distorted. However, if I choose "speaker" option while on the call, they can hear me perfectly. I can hear them fine at all times.

Any ideas how I can sort this?! It's very annoying!
Many thanks =)

Have you tried reset, restore?

Page 34 of the manual:

"If something is not working right, restarting or resetting iPhone will likely solve the
problem.
Restart iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and
hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
Reset iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the
same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
For more troubleshooting suggestions, see Appendix A, “Troubleshooting,” on page 131. "

I had a similar problem too with my iPhone3G - my microphone works intermittently; sometimes works and sometimes doesn't - and I think I just figured it out, that it's definitely a hardware problem.

Get the 'Ocarina' program or a voice recorder, etc., that lets you gauge whether your microphone works directly. I used Ocarina. I blew into the microphone -- no sound (it makes a flute sound when you blow). Then I gently squeezed the bottom-right corner of the phone while blowing, and the sound came. Yes, something is loose - squeezing my phone makes the mike work.

This should let you quickly determine if it's a hardware problem or not.

Similar issue for me. No probs until 2.2 upgrade. Since then microphone is fine in normal phone mode, but if I go onto speakerphone (hands free) person at other end can only hear garbled sounds.

This already tells me it's not the microphone itself that's faulty because it's working fine in normal phone mode. It has to be a bug in the software.

Can anyone suggest anything else to try? Phone resets X3 does not help. Any possibility of bug fix? Should I do as others suggesting and ask for phone replacement?

thanks,

Larry
