Client-error-not-possible" and Network Printer

In a different thread, Matt Broughton helped me figure out how to install a user code to print to the networked Ricoh printer in my office (which is in a business center).

This morning, I attempted to print some lengthy documents to that printer; these documents were set up for A4 paper. After giving the print command, I remembered the paper size and cancelled the jobs, changed the paper size to US letter, and then gave new print commands. The job hung with a message that it was spooling the job to the printer. I went to the printer itself, and it showed that I had a paper size mismatch. I selected US letter, and about 2 or 3 pages printed (which makes sense, being the number of pages that probably got through before I cancelled the jobs). Since then, however, I have been totally unable to print to this printer. The printer shows as "ready" (and other users in the business center are able to print to it). However, whenever I try to print a document to it, the status changes to "printer paused" and the document won't print. If I click "resume" then I get the "client-error-not-possible" message. I can print to my local HP P2015 (connected to my computer via USB) with no problem at all, but I like to use the networked printer for heavier duty print jobs.

Any ideas how to resolve this?

MacBook Pro (4GB RAM), lots of iMacs, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I have seen this error occur to our Canon MFD's when job accounting is enabled on the copier and the user enters an incorrect id or none at all.

When you attempt to print, are you getting prompted to enter the user code?

If you could post the error_log from the print queue then it may help determine what is causing the problem. With the printer queue open, click on the word Printer in the menu bar and select 'Log & History'.

Thanks for the quick reply. No, I am not getting prompted to enter the user code. I had to enter the user code in the PPD file in order to get this to work, because Leopard does not support the entry of user codes.

I'm trying to remember if we had you modify the PPD before adding the printer and keep that modified PPD somewhere. If you still have that modified PPD, it might be easiest to reset the printing system and then add your printer(s) again. It may be that you have something stuck in the printer queue that is causing the problem.

To reset the printing system in OS X 10.5.x, open the Print & Fax System Preference. Control-click (right-click) in the list of printers on the left side. Choose the option to reset the printing system. You will need to add your printer again after you reset the printing system.

I tried resetting the printing system this morning and re-adding the three print queues (my HP LaserJet P2015 connected via USB, my PageSender fax, and then the Ricoh which I've called the Big Ricoh Printer). I then tried to print a test page from Microsoft Word, and encountered the same problem -- it shows the Ricoh printer status as paused, and it won't print.

Here's the log from this morning:

Thanks for posting the cups error log. Just a couple of things I noticed when looking though it.

The first is the queue name, or more so the lack of it, for 'Big Ricoh Printer'. According to the log, the queue for this printer is set to "lpd://75.103.46.34/". This would suggest that no queue name has been set, such as print or lp. Maybe the Ricoh doesn't require a queue name but I know with the Canon internal printer boards, you cannot have a blank queue name on Leopard.

The second thing I would check is that the LPR service is enabled on the printer. You should be able to see this via a Configuration page or via the internal web page of the copier. Actually, you could even try creating another printer queue, but this time selecting IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket, which is also known as RAW Port 9100 printing. If you have Windows computers printing to this machine, this is what they would default to.

Let me know if neither of these help.

What would you recommend setting the queue name to be? I don't recall setting one previously.

Tomorrow morning I will try IP>HP Jetdirect-Socket and will post back with the result.

I would try something like LP. If you don't think you set something previously, then it should not matter what you call it. But I do recall another postee on this forum stating that after entering some text for the queue name, the printing started working again.

Matt, that is exactly what I thought initially, and I asked the folks here at the business center to do just that. But as part of the "blame-the-Mac" mentality, they insisted that there was nothing wrong with their printer and that I needed to troubleshoot my iMac. This morning, they finally agreed to do a reset, and later reported back that there were numerous jobs (not only mine) backed up in the queue. As soon as they completed the reset, I was able to print normally again. Thanks so much to you and to PAHU for your valuable help and assistance, but this time it wasn't a Mac issue at all.

Okay...I can't seem to post a new question. Why is that?

Anyway, I'm having a similar problem. I noticed the other day that I can no longer print to network printers. I'm not sure what's happened, exactly. I've run disk and permissions repairs, and everything has been okay (except for the fact that I got ACL errors, which according to Apple, are fine and normal). Actually, it's not just any network printers. I can print to my HP Deskjet 6840 through Ethernet, but I can't print to any of my LPD or HP Jet Direct printers. When I do, I get the "client-error-not-possible" box, and a message in the queue says that "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstops failed." Furthermore, my error log reads as follows, after I try to print:

I [12/Dec/2008:20:09:55 -0500] [Job 8] Adding start banner page "none".
I [12/Dec/2008:20:09:55 -0500] [Job 8] Adding end banner page "none".

In short, nothing happens. The queue stops trying; it pauses the printer. And it really only shows the "client..." error if I try to resume.

Any ideas? I have been able to print until just the other day, so I don't know what might have happened. I haven't done anything major, that I can think of.
