changing file name is slow

To change the name of a file in the Finder the advice is to:

1 Locate the item you want to rename on your desktop or in a Finder window.

2 Click the item to select it, then click the name.

3 The name is highlighted and you will be able to edit it.

4 Type the new name and press Return.

This works but after step 2, I find there is a very long delay before stage 3 (some 5 seconds - seems an age!).

Sometimes, uncertain whether the click has registered, I select again. This is then interpreted as a double click and the file is opened. Very frustrating,

Is there any way to control the length of this delay?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5), 4 GB RAM

I'm not sure, but what happens if you hit the return or enter keys after selecting the file name? On my machine, clicking on the name has a short delay, but using the return or enter key is instantaneous. On my mate's 17" iMac, the delay is longer. In either case, I've changed my habits and now use the enter key instead of clicking.

AFAICT, there's no setting in the Mouse prefPane to control that specifically, but reducing the double-click speed might be the solution to your problem. Mine's set at the fastest setting.
