You can restore, just search the forums and type in the error # and there will be an answer. What error number came up?

I have done a restore. It erases data and settings but not the os version. What did you do different?

Sorry I didn't mean you can restore back to 2.1. I meant restoring to 2.2 should be fine. Mine has been no problem with the update. 2.2 is all right, the installation needs to be correct. Doing a restore from backup when there are issues like yours will just keep repeating the problem. If the right version of itunes is installed and the firmware is downloaded correctly, the update process should be ok. Try a restore but not from backup. Set up as a new phone and see if it works. Then you can return to your backup. Any new firmware needs to have the cleanest installation to work correctly. If there are corrupt data files on the phone, and they are returned after a restore from backup, issues will continue.

yea but that was not the question. the dude that started this thread wants to downgrade back to 2.1. he is one of those people that feel the 2.2 version came with a lot of "hick ups". (kind of like the people that went into Windows Vista and miss XP. ahahaha f*ing vista, Microsoft should of just put windows millennium back out! ahahahaha)
In theory the only way I see this working is if the phone was completely wiped and restored from a computer/itunes version that never downloaded the 2.2 software.

You cannot retrograde the firmware without hacking the phone. I'm using 2.2 and it works fine. People who pile on too many rubbishy apps will continue to have problems. Run the firmware without restoring to backup, setup as a new phone, and it will work fine. The minute you return corrupt data files created by 3rd party apps back to the phone, then the trouble begins. I suggest anyone with 2.2 problems do a clean install of the firmware without installing 3rd party apps, run the phone and see how it goes. Return app by app and I bet my bottom dollar, you'll see trouble return. It seems no-one wants to do what I'm suggesting because it's easier to whinge and complain. 2.2 is fine. Try it without apps and see!!!!!!! If 2.2 was inherently bad, we would all be having exactly the same issues, wouldn't we. Every issue is different, so it's not a generic 2.2 problem. I have no issues with 2.2. It runs better than 2.1.

Yea, I installed 2.2 they day I got the phone I have had no software related issues. The hardware problem I had was solved quickly at the apple store with a replacement phone. Apple care is a must for all apple products!!!
The 3rd party thing I am 50/50 on. I had 3rd party problems with other phones. Not yet with my iPhone and I am a free software download whore.

On another note about apple care. It of-course does not cover theft or loss. Do you know of a good insurance spot that covers the iPhone since at&t will not touch it. Please don't reply with some "google it" thing. I can do that. I am asking for personal experience if any.

If you have home insurance, call your company and ask them to extend your insurance to cover the phone. Most reputable companies will cover anything you want to add as an extra. It will cost more though.

I love people that say there's no problem because they don't have it. I upgraded two gen 1 iPhones, one is fine, and the other one is totally hosed. No wi-fi at all, and with everything (push email, location blah blah) disabled, it goes from fully charged to battery empty within 4 hours standby. The phone is totally ruined by the 2.2 upgrade, and it wasn't hacked, didn't have a single 3rd party app on it.

I went through restore / reinstall twice, and it's still the same. It's freaking time Apple comments on these issues. I'm in the mood to camp in front of the Apple store and warn people about buying iPhones.

Just because you have a problem doesn't make 2.2 useless for us all. Did you restore the phone, as a new phone? I've said this many times, but corrupt data files are returned with restore from backup, regardless of you having third party apps installed. I always do this to avoid conflicts with newer firmware. Changes in file directories in an update can put the into a tailspin while it's trying to read corrupt data files. Setup as a new phone, and put us out of our misery.
