OK, nanny mode aside, you can ask iTS support for another download, but they have to pay royalties again for you to DL it, so ask nicely here:

Unfortunatly i did not properly back up. I am learning the value of personal back ups. I now own a time capsule and am backing up properly. I still want to take further steps. After all of these years i am seeing some more advantage to saving some files on an internet site server as well.
as i learn more about the apple world and things like 'me.com' maybe i can be much better prepared in the future.
Any tips you may have for me in this area would be appreciated.

My only other advice is make a backup schedule, and stick to it. And test your backup method right away to make sure you can retrieve everything - the itunes backup of DVDs did not work for me, so I'm backing up on to an external hard drive, instead.
I back stuff up weekly, because I DL a lot of music. For others, once a month might be OK.iMac 10.5 or WinXP SP3, Other OS, external hard drive, B-W U2 iPod, 1G shuffle, 2nd gen Nano
