Q: can't connect G3 to DSL

My friend has a dead hard drive on her Gateway (Windows 98) which was connected to a DSL modem. I tried to let her connect with my old Powerbook G3. We hooked up the network cable to the G3 and connected her monitor (the G3 screen is dim). The browsers would try to connect but always failed. Is there something else I could do? The Embarq tech support was unable to help. They did try, but were really not familiar with Mac, at least one that old. I have Internet Explorer on that computer and i think that is the only available browser. If I can connect, I will try to download a better one, if I can find one that will work! Thanks for any help.

The main focus for getting OS 9 to connect would be the TCP/IP Control Panel. You enter whatever the ISP tells you to put in. Then you MUST close the window and save changes to have them take effect.

If they want you to use a username and password to connect, that is likely to be PPPoE, and you would need an additional program like MacPoet (which the ISP may be able to supply), a Router, or an Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.2 or later which supports PPPoE built-in (but would require 256 MB or more RAM to run properly).
