I recently bought the 09 Civic and wanted to use the iphone with its USB interface. But when I plugged it in I got a message that the accessory is not made for iPhone. I'm very disappointed. I wanted to know if there is someway that I can make this connection work.
Usually, you can still use the phone with the car. It may not support charging, and when you are on the EDGE network you may hear a buzzing from the speakers, but I have a "Not made for iPhone" accessory and it works fine with the new iPhone.
But even my Honda's display says "Unsupported". That means that the software in my car is not pairing with the 3g iphone.
IIRC, apple switched 2 pins on the bottom connector from the iPods to the iPhone...
that's why 90% of the iPod accessories out there will not work with my 3G...
some will put the phone into airplane mode.
some will just sit there...
some, i started to check to make sure they are compat with the iPhone. like the belkin car charger...

You may want to investigate this:

It claims on providing compatibility with the iPhone 3G and older car systems designed for the first gen iPhone.

What this means is the iPhone probably won't charge and it is unsure if the cable/system is properly shielded to prevent interference from the iPhone's radios. It should still play music fine, if you start hearing buzzing and popping sounds put it in air plane mode to get rid of that.
I tried again yesterday after restarting my iphone and also did the soft reset. The moment I connect my iphone to the car's USB I got the error message on my iphone that the accessory was not made for the iphone. But the car's audio system identified the device and started playing the songs. I see that the iphone shows that it is being charged but I did not plug it in long enough to see if it is actually charging.
For now I'm happy that the connection is working. Thanks for all the suggestions in this forum.
