How can I number my notes in text edit?

I am compiling a list of things.
Which is alot.
So I've written quite a few, in one single text edit file.
But I want to know how many there are.
So can I number them as I go along, without having to manually re-# them everytime a new one is added? Because it throws the whole list out of whack everytime, obviously.

Are there bullet points, or a way to keep the #ing in check?

Hope that is comprehensive....

Certainly you can do that in TextEdit. You can create a list using Format > Text > List...

But an easier way, create a list on the fly by hitting Option-Tab. This will start a list using "-" as bullets. You can change the format (e.g. to a numbered list) anytime by Control-click/Right-click on any list item and selecting "List..."

End a list with double return; start a sub-list (indented) with tab at the beginning of a new line; out-dent with shift-tab.

You can even do this using the Stickies application. (Applications/Stickies)

Creating a list in a sticky note
You can quickly create a list of bulleted items, and then change the formatting of the bullets to other characters, such as diamonds or numbers.

To create a list:
Press Option-Tab to create a bulleted list item.
To create a list item on the next line, press Return once.
To create a paragraph without a bullet, press Return twice.
