DVD burning issue: Focus servo failure

In an attempt to burn a DVD-R using Toast Titanium 9, I finally get:
*The drive reported an error*
*Sense key = Hardware error*
*Sense code = 0x09,0x02*
*Focus servo failure*
HELP!

iMac (2.8 GHz), Mac OS X (10.5.5)

You can always reboot, repair permissions etc., though this is a hardware error reported by the drive that probably won't help . It cannot hurt to try new media, not a new disk of the same brand but a new brand. Try Verbatim DVD +R. If this error persists you need it fixed.

Do you get the same error using a burn folder and not Toast? With a CD-R?

I just encountered this error for the first time trying to burn images to some CD-Rs for family. I'll see if DVDs still work and report back.
