iPhone letters don't pop up when keys are pressed

You know how the letters pop up from under your finger when keys a pressed on the keyboard to let you know which key you press, well sometimes certain letters on my keyboard stop popping up. A restart fixes the key but a few minutes or hours (intermittent) later a different letter stops working. Anybody else have this problem?

Is it that the letters don't pop up, but you can still type them,
or is it that you can't even type those specific letters?

--If you can't type certain letters at certain times it might
just be the spell-check logic trying to prevent a spelling error.
Turn off auto correction and see if that solves it.

Is this a problem of the phone being SLOW, and if you hold the
letter long enough it will eventually pop up?

--If its slowness, hold the home button down for 10 seconds in the
application where you were typing and then restart that application.
--Try turning off key-clicks to see if that speeds things up.

I believe this is a new bug in 2.2. Mine does it every time on the "a", but only when in Safari when I have to enter an "a" in any form field.

The "a" will type, but the 'letter balloon' will not pop up.

I wonder if this has something to do with the options that are available on other-language keyboards. When pressing the "a" in some languages, it waits for further input for the type of accent that is needed.

I wonder if someone on the mobile safari team took a shortcut with their functionality and did them all the same no matter the language.

I just started noticing this on the Twitter.com login page. My user ID has a lowercase 's' in it and I can't see the popup in either the User ID or Password field. Uppercase 'S' works fine, as do all the other characters but the lowercase 's' won't. The alternatives for 's' pop up if I hold down the button. I recently upgraded to 2.2.1 but I think it was happening before that.

Is there something about an input field on a web page that causes this behavior?

The problem seems to be related to the Auto-correct and Auto-capitalization feature. If I turn either one off (Settings->General->Keyboard), I don't have the problem but when both are on, it comes back. It also seems to affect the first character that I type in the input field.

With both Auto features on, if I go to the login page of Twitter and type, say, a 'v' as the first character of the Username, a capital V is entered and the "V" pops up, but if I backspace, tap shift to go to lowercase and tap v again, the v does not pop up from the keyboard but it does show up in the username input field. I can reset things if I tap the Done button on the keyboard then tap in the username field to bring the keyboard back up. The problem is still there, but I can see it happen with a new letter if I want.

Try it and post what you find. You don't have to have a Twitter account to see it happen and I'd be interested to know if it's consistent.

Hey, I'm having the exact same problem. I also noticed it happend since the 2.2 update. I've restored 3 times without any sucess. This bug is driving me crazy! I was wondering if it had anything to do with the new "Turn off Spell Check" function?

I can't seem to replicate the problem on the Twitter login page, every key pops-up fine.
My problem usually appears on the hotmail website, so after trying on Twitter, I went ahead to hotmail.com and my 'a' and 'v' keys didn't pop-up. I turned off the Auto-capitalization feature, since I never have Auto-correct on, and all the keys worked fine. I have to try out a different set of on/off combinations to see what works. I just hope they fix this bug soon. It's driving me crazy!
