NVidia 9600 graphic cards defective?

I was just about to place an order on the new MacBook Pro, when I read an article that states, the new NVidia 9600M are just as defective as the 8600's.

Which is the reason behind the screens blacking out.

Can anyone confirm that the newer MacBook Pro's coming out of the factory don't have this problem?

yup it is defective. I had bought one about a week after the announcement and it had nothing but problems. I got screen shots of it hitting 112c.

So, it was replaced (they almost didn't replace it however, even though it was in the two weeks.) The new one did the same thing, and over the course of a month I had gone to two different apple store/repair centers.

I finally gave up and requested a full refund. For close to a 3,000$ computer I expect it to function at least. I was only using one program at a time and I reproduced it with just ichat!

This was my first and last Macintosh. I just can't justify paying that much as a student if the hardware is this faulty. I question why more people aren't angry about this and speaking out.

I already placed a call from apple and they open up a ticket for me and now they are in the process of investigating the issues. At this point since im still in the 30 days bracket.. They will send me a newer one. I specifically asked them not to send me a faulty nvidia graphic cards and i asked them to restart my apple care warranty upon receiving the new one..Its such a shame that apple have to go thru this. I mean its NVIDIA who made this big mistake and apple is in the front line.

thanks =)

well, they opened a ticket for me too. The response was it's a normal temperature... I don't care what apple technicians say, I am a computer science major and Intel's own white papers for the t9600 the CPU used in the uni body mac book pro's say the critical temperature junction for the CPU is 105c! Something smells about the whole thing they are covering up a serious screw up.

Best thing to do is run a game if you really want to test out the 9600. My MBP Unibory 15" ran Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead as well as Counterstrike: Source in Windows XP for substantial amounts of time with no problems, so I am not worried about this issue in my case.

There are some defective 9600s because Nvidia has been sprinkling them into the line of improved 9600s being shipped to Apple, so there are still a few that will need to be replaced.

That said, the amount of good 9600s far surpasses the amount of faulty ones.

Hi,
I read your ads and I already make an appointment @ the genius bar because of my faulty NVIDIA Chip.
I get a" black screen of death " if I play Command @ Conquer for 5 - 10 minutes...
What can do what can I say ––> My purchase date was the 01.11.08 and I want a new Macbook Pro not a repaired one ... Can I stand on my right cause I paid 4000 A$ ?!
