iPhone not detected by iTunes (VISTA PC)

I've got a 3G iphone which used to connect to my VISTA PC with no problems using the previous version of iTunes. Since installing the latest version of iTunes my iPhone is not detected by iTunes however, windows appears to detect it as either a camera or storage device. I've tried with no luck..

1. reinstalling iTunes 8.0.2.20 from scratch
2. restarting the iPod/Apple mobile device services
3. updating the drivers for the device
4. disabled firewall/antivirus
5. installing the previous version of iTunes

In addition I've run the itunes diagnostic tool and it can not connect with the iphone.

Im guessing this is some kind of driver issue, but I have no clue how to solve the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

mikeuk2000,

I see you've reinstalled iTunes, but have you removed Apple Mobile Device Support and reinstalled it as well?

When reinstalling the Apple Mobile Device Service, it's best to do so with the iPhone disconnected. Reconnect the iPhone once the process is complete, and it should begin to install the drivers.

Another troubleshooting step I would recommend is disconnecting all USB other peripherals and rebooting, if you haven't.

Hope this helps,

Raleigh D., thanks for the advice. I've just tried uninstalling itunes, quicktime and Apple Mobile Device Support, then reinstalling everything again. After pluggin my iphone in again, windows says that it has successfully installed the Apple Mobile device, however, itunes still does not detect my iphone.

I can't help but feel this a problem with itunes. I don't understand how windows detects my iphone but itunes doesn't.

mikeuk2000,

If it seems to be more of a software issue, the next step in isolation would be to test in a new user account:

Although the title of the article is not applicable, the troubleshooting steps are valid and it does show you how to create the test user account.

Hope this helps,

mikeuk2000,

If that is the case, the next step I would recommend is to connect the iPhone to another computer that meets system requirements. This could be accomplished at an Apple Store if there is one nearby, and if the same issue persists they can service the iPhone so long as it's still under warranty.

As for a patch/update, I'm not sure one is required in this case. My iPhone still is visible in iTunes after the update, as are many others, both running Windows and Mac OS X. Naturally you would tend to see more people with similar issues here as that is typically why anyone takes the time to post.

Hope this helps,

I am having the same type of problems. 3G (with 2.2.1), iTunes (8.0.2.02), Vista Home Premium. iTunes will not recognize the phone. Computer does. Have tried all the solutions listed above to no avail. Apple Store said to call Apple Support -- I am currently on-hold with them, but so far they are just scratching their heads.

I did read on another post that someone had luck by going back to iTunes 7.7 -- a copy of which I guess they googled and found. Don't know if that would mess around with the phone (if it had already been synced with 8.0.2 or not).

Hopefully they can figure out where this iTunes bug is and fix. I am syncing with my old machine that runs XP while I wait... and wait... and wait...
