I've got a 3G iphone which used to connect to my VISTA PC with no problems using the previous version of iTunes. Since installing the latest version of iTunes my iPhone is not detected by iTunes however, windows appears to detect it as either a camera or storage device. I've tried with no luck..

1. reinstalling iTunes from scratch
2. restarting the iPod/Apple mobile device services
3. updating the drivers for the device
4. disabled firewall/antivirus
5. installing the previous version of iTunes

In addition I've run the itunes diagnostic tool and it can not connect with the iphone.

Im guessing this is some kind of driver issue, but I have no clue how to solve the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Looks like you've tried all the suggestions. You might check this article to see if you missed anything, iPhone not recognized in iTunes for Windows.

When all else fails, call these guys: U.S. iPhone technical support: 1-800-MY-IPHONE (1-800-694-7466)

I see you've reinstalled iTunes, but have you removed Apple Mobile Device Support and reinstalled it as well?

Removing iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista

When reinstalling the Apple Mobile Device Service, it's best to do so with the iPhone disconnected. Reconnect the iPhone once the process is complete, and it should begin to install the drivers.

Another troubleshooting step I would recommend is disconnecting all USB other peripherals and rebooting, if you haven't.

    Hope this helps,

Good advice for dealing with the 'VISTA PC' problem, in my experience....

Raleigh D., thanks for the advice. I've just tried uninstalling itunes, quicktime and Apple Mobile Device Support, then reinstalling everything again. After pluggin my iphone in again, windows says that it has successfully installed the Apple Mobile device, however, itunes still does not detect my iphone.

I can't help but feel this a problem with itunes. I don't understand how windows detects my iphone but itunes doesn't.

If it seems to be more of a software issue, the next step in isolation would be to test in a new user account:

iTunes for Windows Vista: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues

Although the title of the article is not applicable, the troubleshooting steps are valid and it does show you how to create the test user account.

    Hope this helps,

I had this same problem with 8.0.1 and, like you, tried everything that support suggested (including disabling my security software). Nothing worked however and it wasn't until version 8.0.2 was released that iTunes finally found my iPhone.

Raleigh , thank you again, but alas, creating a new user accountin VISTA did not work. It just treated my iphone like a removable hardrive/camera and asked how i would like to view the contents of the device.

How mnay users are required to have a problem before a patch/update for itunes comes out?

I've currently got Apple Mobile Device service on my PC. Is this the latest version?

If that is the case, the next step I would recommend is to connect the iPhone to another computer that meets system requirements. This could be accomplished at an Apple Store if there is one nearby, and if the same issue persists they can service the iPhone so long as it's still under warranty.

    iPhone Service: Frequently Asked Questions

As for a patch/update, I'm not sure one is required in this case. My iPhone still is visible in iTunes after the update, as are many others, both running Windows and Mac OS X. Naturally you would tend to see more people with similar issues here as that is typically why anyone takes the time to post.

    Hope this helps,

I've got exactly the same problem. Since there are more than a few of us who use a 64 bit OS, you'd think Apple would put some priority on solving this problem.

If anyone comes up with a solution, I would very much like to hear about it.
