How to delete podcasts from ipod? Please help.

We have this new ipod that automatically loads podcasts that are stored in itunes. We don't want it to do that but we don't know how to stop it and we don't know how to delete them. Managing all this is tricky. We have tried to do what we are told to delete songs but nothing works. Please give a detailled answer as it seems to be "la mer a boire". Thanks.

for some reason your suggestion doesn't work on my ipod. I go back and for and it registers all the podcasts in my library as already being on my ipod if I deselect the podcast button. its really beginning to annoy me because I only want a certain amount of podcasts (i.e. 3 recent unplayed) on the ipod, but it'll put all unplayed podcasts on the ipod.

i'm beginning to think this ipod 4th gen was a waste of money. it sure is turning out to be a waste of my time.
