Ipod 3rd generation - ihome and other charger/player question

I have an ipod 3rd generation device. A month or so ago I was at a hyatt hotel which had an ihome ipod dock and charging radio. I put my ipod in and it wouldn't play or charge unless it was in the aux input. I just bought a different branded (not ihome) charging station and speaker system from costco that is designed to power my phones and other devices as well as the ipod. Again it doesn't seem to charge or play the ipod when in the cradle. I think there is a compatibility issue, but am not sure. Can anyone advise? If there is a compatibility issue then why?

It's hard to know what any compatibility issue may be since you don't tell us what brand of dock/charging station you bought.

One thing I can say for sure is that the 3rd gen iPod doesn't charge via a usb connection only via firewire, so that is most likely the reason the iPod is not charging.

Almost certainly, the dock/speaker system you bought will not be connecting to the pins on the iPod's dock connector that charge it.

Hi,

maybe I wasn't clear what the problem is in my earlier message. I put the ipod into the charging cradle (not the aux) and it is supposed to charge and also play through the speakers, but it does not do so. It also didn't do so when i used the ihome device.

Without access to the manual or specs on the third party multipurpose dock a definitive answer will be impossible.

However, it would be safe to assume based on performance that your older iPod model will not play through this device.

A newer model iPod that is USB based would probably work, however your iPod is FireWire only.

The connection cradle pinouts are different.

I understand, but as I said earlier the 3rd gen iPod will only charge via a firewire connection which the device you have bought clearly isn't.

I have a 3rd generation 10 GB iPod and an iHome (Model iH5 if that's the version number), and the iHome charges and plays it fine. I don't think it's a complete compatibility issue between the two, but I guess there are different versions of the iHome and that could maybe be a problem.
