I don't think you can "revert the genre back to a default" because it's not really a default, it's simply someone else's choice of genre, and as far as I can tell, your iTunes has no process for asking Gracenote (who supply iTunes with the info) for the information again, (unless you delete the album and re-import it!). It would be quicker and easier for you to change the genre yourself, as you have done previously.
Gracenote (mentioned above) is a universal database, used by different computer programmes for different purposes. Presumably, Gracenote entries are usually initially supplied by an employee of the record company that released the album. If that employee was having a bad day, that information may not always be accurate. If a fan of the band, or even the band themselves don't like the entry, they can (and do) supply a new entry and this explains why you sometimes see a choice of entries for one album.
As you have found,
you can change the genre in
your iTunes and that is so that you can set up your iTunes to suit you, which you have done. If you're looking for a quick way of changing many track entries to the same genre, try *Control/select item* or put all the tracks into one playlist and then change the whole list.
"In the old days", when I were a lad 😉 and buying CDs in a shop was the only way to buy music, I discovered the same artist in different genres sections in three different stores, and albums which "moved" from one genre to another as the years went by!
Finally - don't get hung up on someone else's choice of genre, it's only a guide. Enjoy *your choice* of music on your iPod! To "borrow and mis-quote" from Meg St_Clair (another forum contributor) - It's only an +*genre type*+ , not the truth of the universe....
