The external display issues remain, even after installing the update.

I'm sick of this!
Is it a hardware issue or software related?
Are the 9600 graphics chips defective?

Come on Apple and be honest to your customers, we all paid a lot of money for these systems!

Does anyone out there know where can I complain to?
I need an email address or something that is not directed at iphones or ipods!

    out of curiosity, when did you purchase your machine? i'm wondering if it was just the first batch of the unibody machines or...

    That's a good question. I have a CTO 2.8 GHZ MBP that I received a couple of weeks after they were announced. I run it on a 23" ACD at the office and a new 24" LED display at home. I do not have any issues with either display. I didn't before the firmware and OS X updates, and I don't now. It seems that it's not something that affects all unibody MBPs.

    well, it's good to know that these issues don't seem to be plaguing all machines. i would really like to pick up one of these machines up by the end of the year, but after reading these forums a little buyers paranoia tends to creep in. it would definitely help all involved if users posted more of their system config details and purchase dates with their complaints.

    (note : this isn't particularly aimed at the thread author, i've just been reading alot of complaints about these machines with very few usable troubleshooting details listed. it's sort of like calling up tech support and saying MY MACHINE IS BROKEN and leaving it at that.... ya know?)

    Allow me to clarify...

    I absolutely had problems with this MBP. I've owned just about every model of PowerBook/MacBook going back to the 500 series, and I don't recall another being this buggy out of the box. I had the black screen on wake from sleep, and the MBP would often hang or freeze on shutdown/restart. However, I didn't have any issues with my external displays. Ironically, those worked great.

    The bugs I did have appear to have corrected themselves with the firmware updates. Since applying them, I've not had a repeat of any of the issues I had experienced.

    no fix for this problem
    I have extra buyed a mini dvi adaptor with my macbook (30,- €) to connect my external display (600,- €) and nothing works. now I sitting here in front of a 13" glossy display, my old computer wich works fine I have sold

    a 13" glossy display? sounds to me that you're on a macbook and not a macbook pro (which is what this thread is about...)

    wonderful to know, thank you! i fully expect and am aware that there tends to be bugs in rev-a apple products. i don't really have a problem with this fact as long as they get addressed / fixed somewhat quickly. again, thanks for your posts, they help alot!

    same problem with macbook. with 10.5.4 it works fine, since 10.5.5 it does not work. it is a software bug and apple knows this bug since long time.

    It doesn't effect all uni-bodies? Are you telling me that you haven't had a single issue then?

    Are you also discounting that there are issues more to the point?

    Do you work for Apple by any chance?

    Well maybe I can draw your attention to this:

    Some 3700+ hits and some 60+ replies. HUGE numbers of folk have these problems.

    3,700 hits is understandable considering the amount of press that these "problems" have been receiving. i've been scouring the boards myself in hopes of making an educated buying decision and trying to weigh the odds. 60+ replies does not a MASSIVE problem make, expecially when you consider how many machines they've sold in several months.

    would you mind telling us when you bought your problematic machine? first week, recently, etc?

    I have what I consider a defective 9600 (currently being replaced as we speak)..

    Purchased the week of release form a brick and mortar store.

    thanks robert. from what i can suss out, it really does seem to be the earlier machines that have been having the bad luck. sorry that you have to go through all that, at least apple seems to be really good (and understanding) about replacing the defects so far...

    I'm not sure what to make of this at this point. I ordered a CTO 2.8GHz with 4GB RAM and 320GB HD the day they were announced. First week or so, few if any problems. Then the "UHF" like bands of static began to appear randomly. I use my computer 90% of the time driving an external monitor. I use a separate set up at home and work with duplicates of all cables. The problem occurs on both. I spoke with Apple Care - they patched me over to support and moved me up to Tier one pretty quick, even had me send in my System Profiler information for every combination of screen and graphics card. Then they emailed me a program to capture my monitor info again with every combination of screen and graphics card. No solution. They finally asked to "capture" my computer for their labs and sent me a new one.

    Once again, about 2 1/2 weeks of smooth sailing and bam, same issues now occurring. If it's a driver issue, why is everything fine for so long? Also, 10.5.6 and the new firmware have failed to address. Given my above exchanges with Apple, they certainly can't claim they don't know about it.

    I've been using Apple Products for a long time. I've seen some real buggy stuff - like when File Vault first came out but this is the worst I've experienced. Seems like poor quality control. If it's a select few machines, I appear to have won the lottery as I've had two of them.

    I'm sure this issue is much more wide spread as it is a non-issue if you only use the internal display. Only people consistently driving an external display will even know there is a problem.
