10.5.6 update crash followed by kernel panics

I ran the update, but it crashed midway through complaining about the media it was being run from, tried a restart, but kernel panics, tried single user mode, but get multiple "Package 0 didn't get an HPET", to fail at the end in "No HPETs available...CPU(s) configured incorrectly" followed by panic and some stack trace dump (included at end), tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and the PRAM, all to no avail, ran the extended hardware test with no errors, but I am able to boot up into the emergency boot partition created by Tech Tool Pro.

Apart from reformatting my hard drive is there any way to recover my Mac, please!

It looks like "HPET" is the culprit

Have you tried starting your mac up from your Leopard disk that came with the machine and if so, can you run disk permissions from there (on the startup drive you wish to recover)?
NB: some reckon it's not desirable to run disk permissions from the disk but I have done it in the past and it got me started at least, repairing disk permissions AGAIN from the startup drive, (as the system was up and running)
NB2: If you can start up, you could run the combo updater: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_6_ComboUpdate

just adding things I've tried:

* hold down shift at power on to safeboot
* Clear out the PRAM by holding Command-Option-P+R
* trying to remove RAM modules since they are after markets
* boot from Leopard DVD by holding down Option during boot, see the selection to choose to boot from drive or DVD, select DVD, hear the DVD drive spins, but alas it ends in the black screen.

At this point I'm dead in the water. Sigh.

My MacBook also died last night after trying to install the 10.5.6 update. I recieved the whole kernel panic screen for the CPU, EIP was null 0x000000000. After trying to do an archive install still nothing.......Apple Care tech set me up an appointment at our local Genuis Bar...... long story short they have to send it off to have the logic board replaced.

same here. updated 10.5.6 this morning on my mac pro, screens remained blue since then.

i attached it through firewire to my powerbook, so that it became a firewire disk, repaired disk and permissions, still blue screens
i started up in safe modus: did a MainMenu refresh with cache and everything, changed the login options, so that i would start up with the login screen. that helped: i reach the login screen now after restarting. But then, when i log in: blue screens.

been on the phone with apple for hours. now i'm going to back up everything in safe modus, and reinstall leopard.

hope the blue screens will be gone afterwards.

lost a whole day work and deadline's nearing for a project. wish i'd never done the update. should've known better.

I follow the hackitosh people instructions ( http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=84092) and I moved the file /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext

After that I enter to my computer without problems!!! :-D
My Mac OS Version is 10.5.6 :-S So the update was corrupted and my Mac is in an inconsistent state .... So I return to 10.5.5

I expect that this help you guys

IMPORTANT: DON'T TRY TO RE-RUN THE UPDATE WITHOUT RETURNING FIRST TO 10.5.5 OR YOUR MAC OS WILL BE DEAD.

Oh well, after conversations with Apple, kindly telling me that I had done everything correctly to try and fix this problem, but there was nothing else, but to reinstall.

Luckily Carbon Copy Cloner copied everything for me and I have now reinstalled Leopard, copied back all my user stuff and apps and run the combi update, and all is well

As an addendum, my original update was only 190Mb and not the 327Mb mentioned elsewhere, so as a warning to others, check the size of the update, if it's 190Mb, then run the combi update instead.

Despite all the moans and problems, the final reinstall and update took a total of 2 hours, somewhat less than the 15 hours it took to run the same process on my friends XP machine

That is absolutely incorrect.

The updates for both my Quad G5 and MacBook Pro were both 190 Mb, and both applied without any problems whatsoever.

Grr, hit by this bug too, on an Intel mini.

Software Update got to 56% and started to gray-screen but only got about 1/3rd of the way down the screen before freezing. Reboot to safe mode results in kernel panic.

After looking at the suggested solution here, opted to Archive and (Re)Install. I don't think this thread should be marked "Solved" when the solution is so ambiguous. (Move the file how? Revert to 10.5.5 how?)
