GPU Temperature - How hot it too hot? (And what to do about it...)

I just received my MacBook Pro and noticed the temperature is pretty hot on the left hand side of the laptop.

I installed iStat Pro and noticed the GPU Diode is aroun 61 deg and the 59 deg for the GPU heat sink. Actually most of the temps are up in the 50s except for Heatsink A and B, and HD. Is this typical?

Since I am not a gamer, is there something I can do to configure the video card to run cooler?

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Keeping some clearance under the case for and being careful to avoid blocking the vent under the hinge on the back edge go a long way to maintaining comfortable temps. Try to avoid using the MBP on a blanket or pillow to keep things cool. A lapboard--either homemade of purchased--is a good idea for time you aren't using the notebook on a desk. The processor is thermally protected and is supposed to do a safety shutdown when temps hit 100C. \

You can use the utility Activity Monitor (in Applications > Utilities) to see if any process is running overtime and creating extra heat.

"left hand side" heat usually means that the HD is doing a lot of work (often because of spotlight indexing) or because a flat battery is getting charged up and heating up the relevant circuitry.

None of those temps are a worry. Even GPU temps in the 80's C aren't uncommon when it is working hard , and many Dell's run the same video card another 20º higher again!

Cheers
