all songs gone

My iPod has been freezing lately, so I keep fixing it by pressing menu and the middle button, but now the last time I did that and turned it back on, ALL of my songs were deleted and it was set back to factory settings (I think). I just tried plugging it into my computer, and iTunes won't even recognize the iPod. Do I need to send it back in....it's almost a year old???
