I bought a Belkin cassette adapter this week, and it just sounds terrible compared to FM radio and CDs in my car. I have my iPod nano set to 3/4 volume, and the vocals sound tinny, and the music sounds pretty hollow. Is a cassette adapter just that BAD of a technology, or is there something wrong?

I would think that you should get "acceptable" sound from the belkin, if not return it and try a diffrent brand. You did not give any details as to what car you drive or what the cassette deck is like...but while you won't get cd quality sound, you should get decent sound. I tried my wifes sony cassette adpater this weekend because I was sick of my iTrip, and I thought the sound overall was fine....much better than the iTrip. But I heard this annoying clicking sound....so I am opting for a direct connection to the cd changer connector on the back of the radio.
It is just a matter of tolerances....
It's not the fault of the Belkin adapter specifically. While the unit could have a problem, it is most likely a bad fit with your specific cassette player. Another Belkin unit may work better, or another cassette adapter altogether may be a better fit.
I used a Belkin adapter and it sounded much better than any FM transmitter I had tried. In our two vehicles, we now use a Blitzsafe direct interface for excellent audio.

My car is a Hyundai 2003 Tiburon GT with the included Infiniti CD/Cassette system with subwoofer in the trunk. Unfortunately, I foolishly threw out the packaging for the adapter after mangling it with scissors just to open it. I don't think Target will take it back, even with a receipt.
I dont have a Belkin cassette adapter, i just have a bog standard one for my ipod. I find the best thing to do for that is to have the volume on the ipod on the highest setting and then adjust the volume on the stereo itself. Then i find it is fine. The only annoying thing with mine is the high pitch noise that the tape constantly emits (to alert you that the stereo is on i assume). It takes skill to get the volume at the right level so that music sounds good but you arent being given a headache by the high pitched squeek!
