10.5.6 Update-DOES NOT SEARCH ANYMORE

It was bad enough that the new OS 10.5 doesn't search it's own server very well anymore, but now with this update the finder doesn't search it AT ALL! I can't search the millions of files we have on our OSX server anymore. I can't search for ANYTHING anymore.....how the heck am I suppose to get any work done having to manually look for the files I need to update.

We are back to the manual paperwork search we once did 10 years again. Apple is really disappointing me in this area. I want to go back to 10.4, that search worked PERFECTLY!

Help me Apple...or someone else!

Odd? After updating spotlight re-indexed my external drives etc. For me they are still working fine so I guess I'm lucky.

"Does anyone know how to get Spotlight to re-index everything?"

Yes, in a round about way. If you go to System Preferences and click on Spotlight. In the Spotlight preference pane there is a tab marked Privacy. If you click on privacy you get the option to add files or drives that are not to be indexed. If you drag the troublesome drive into the box to prevent indexing and leave it to do whatever it needs to do. On removing the drive form this list the drive will be re-indexed and your Spotlight problems should be solved.

Sorry if this sounds like a long winded method. I am sure that there must be a better way using terminal.

Hope this helps,

Chuck

The only way that I've found to search on a mounted server (using OS 10.5.6) in the finder's spotlight is to search within a folder on that server. For whatever reason, you can't search on the root directory of the server. So in theory, you should be able to search on that server if you put everything in a folder. Kind of bass ackwards. Or you could use Adobe Bridge to search.

For everyone reporting on this problem, Apple doesn't read these forums, so if you want to get their attention, send both Feedback and bug reports/enhancement requests via Apple's Bug Reporter system. To do the latter, join the Apple Developer Connection ( ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

I can't help with the issue since I don't connect to servers.

I tried getting Spotlight to re-index the drive using sudo mdutil -E -i on (drag volume here) in Terminal, but it didn't work either.

I haven't tried mounting the volumes using samba, but searching folders on the mounted volume seems to work, just no searching at the root level of the share.

I'm really hoping Apple fixes this quickly.
