Based on the machines people are claiming in the footer of their posts, yes, it looks like a variety of machines and both Intel and PowerPC.

Ah....the Facebook logout does seem to be strictly correlated to having Adium running and checking my facebook account. But, I don't see any blank cookies in Safari for facebook when I lose my login. Maybe I'm not looking for the right cookie (was watching cookies which matched "facebook" in the search box).

Sorry for the multiple posts, but one more piece of info I forgot to mention...

Last week when I was trying to "fix" the issues I was having with HyperNews I mentioned, I was able to get the cookies to stop losing their content by doing a "Reset Safari..." and clearing the cookies (plus most everything else). But the problem came back a few days later. It appears to temporarily fix the problem.

Yeah I actually looked at that as well, and realized it wasn't a very helpful question. Generally speaking, there's a cookie issue at hand, and our best efforts to remedy the matter fall short. So at this point, and I think many of us have alluded to it before...we NEED Apple on this one! The best we can do (which really stinks) is frequently login until help arrives. Sigh...

I hope Apple fixes this soon. Believe it or not, I had to launch Firefox to complete an order I was trying to place on the Apple Store with Safari. It kept on resulting in an error message saying that I needed to restart my session, but the problem kept on reoccurring. I did the same exact thing using Firefox and had no issues on the Apple Store.

So I am forced to use two browsers at the same time until this cookie issue that 10.5.6 introduced is finally fixed.

For the record, I do not use or had ever installed Adium, I deleted the one Web Clipping I had (and have restarted since), I had in-installed Safari (it helped for a couple days), yet the problem still prevails.

I can't even think of using Safari to do a thing in Facebook now. Fortunately, I get my Gmail through the Mail app, so I haven't had to use the Gmail website for it.

Now that the holidays are over (I think) and Macworld is underway... I hope this issue is resolved ASAP.

    Cheers,
    Louis

I have kept Adium closed for a while. Today I ran it again so I could add a few new contacts.

While running Adium ... and while logged in to Gmail in Safari ... within minutes I could no longer use Gmail. A quick check of mail.google.com cookies clocked in at just under (wait for it) ... 900!

I cleared them out and continued. A few minutes later, Gmail was down for the count. Checked the cookies again. Almost 900! Cleared them again, and the vicious cycle continued.

Closed Adium, and the problem stopped - for now. (By this evening, if the past few days are any indication, the count will creep back up to around 400 or so, and I'll have to clear them in able to re-login to Gmail.)

I realize it's not specifically an Adium or Safari or Gmail problem. (My money is still on WebCore and the cookie handling as of 10.5.6.) Still, I wanted to share my latest observations, for the record.

Hmm ... 400 vs 900 cookies ... I wonder if we're looking at some kind of race condition here, and the addition of Adium only serves to amplify it?

    Ditto, ditto, ditto....

Having the same frustating! issue with Gmail and another site I'm often logged on to - etsy.com. I don't wanna use Firefox.

    Apple, pleeeease.

and... I have no idea what Adium is or does, so I don't use it or have it.

Adium is a mighty nice chat client. Worth a look-see if you use several chat services beyond those supported by iChat: http://www.adiumx.com/

Meanwhile, I have not been running Adium (again), and I am now clearing cookies every five minutes or so. They keep coming back, to the tune of 900+ cookies. The overwhelming majority are of the GMAILSTAT prefixed variety.
  • Joe D'Andrea Level 2 (195 points)
Within moments - there we go again - 800+ GMAILSTAT cookies.

If I ONLY delete cookies starting with GMAILSTAT then I don't even have to go through the login again. It just starts working anew. At this point, I could create some AppleScript that tosses those cookies every few minutes. (Hmm. Odd choice of words there. Heh-heh.)

Also notable is the 4-digit number after GMAILSTAT which ends up reaching around the high 9000's. It's as if there is some runaway cookie creation but no cookie removal. It just builds up and then stops short.

Trying to wrap my brain around what might be happening w/o knowing the internals of Gmail or Apple WebKit/WebCore's cookie functions. In the case of Gmail it could be their 4-digit limit imposed behind the scenes, coupled with the cookie function issues (whatever they might be) all comes together to create this connection issue.

I'm adding my voice in as one among the frustrated throngs who can't stay logged in to ANY site in Safari since I upgraded to 10.5.6. I can use any site that doesn't require log-in, but any site that does require it, I can't stay logged in for more than 30 seconds. Facebook, Gmail, my bank, SXC, YouVersion, anything.

My iMac at home (which also has 10.5.6) is just fine. I do have Adium on my MacBook Pro, but I never use it (and I truly mean I never use it). I have deleted, reset, reinstalled, repaired everything I can think of, but I still have the issue.

So I'd love to find Safari 3.2.2 in my Software Update any day now...

I've had enough!! I have to delete my 400 Gmail cookies every 30 min - 1 hour, and Facebook also logs out a few times per day. I don't use Adium (don't even know what it is). This has been happening since ~Christmas. Is it Gmail or Safari?? Someone needs to fix this or at LEAST address why this is happening! It's ridiculous! Arghh.
