VIEWING ONLINE TV WITH IPHONE

My girl just bought a 3G. She is from Vietnam and when on her computer, watches online TV from sites like http://vietnamlive.tv (Vietnamese programing).

When we view this site on the iPhone, the programs do not play. I am not sure if we need a player download of some kind (Quicktime, Flash or Other).

Anyone know if the blackberrys have flash and can view the web better than the iPhone.I've had both iPhones and they are cool phones and all but I'm tired of waiting for flash and don't believe the "apple" gods are gunna grant us this wish.I would leave this phone if blackberry does,I also checked radio shack for info on the blackberrys but they had no clue what I was talking about.

You should go into an AT&T/Tmobile/VZW store and see if you can play a flash site on a BlackBerry.

All the stores have phones that are 100% functional. You can make test calls, access the internet, send SMS, MMS, etc. Just like you could with the iPhone models.

I am amazed that people don't go play with these gadgets before they buy them. If you want a particular feature, don't depend on someone's opinion, but go try it for yourself.

I believe some Blackberry models or maybe all models include a Flash-lite version. Based on "lite" included with the name, it is a limited mobile version, not a full flash version so all flash content available on the web will not be available, but you should be able to catch all advertisements that are provided with flash.

Even with flash-lite, the Blackberry's browser doesn't compare to Safari on the iPhone. Not even close IMO.

As already provided, visit a Verizon and/or AT&T store to play with a Blackberry demo model for a browser comparison.

You currently have a few options for viewing video on the iPhone, but unfortunately not from the site you want. The Safari browser on the iPhone does not support Flash, so you have to use an application to view video. Currently you can view video with the YouTube, Joost, and Orb applications. YouTube and Joost play video from their respective web sites. YouTube will work over both cellular data networks (Edge/3G) and WiFi. Joost requires WiFi. Orb will work over either network but requires a streaming PC server be configured (your home PC with a video tuner card and the Orb server software running). Hopefully soon Sling will release an iPhone SlingPlayer which will allow Slingbox video streams to also play on the iPhone, but no word on when that will be available. Hope this info helps.

Sling Media is still working on porting a mobile version of SlingPlayer for the iPhone. They currently offer a free download of the desktop version for both OS X and Windows which requires one to purchase the SlingBox to stream media. I contacted the developer of MobiTV but they currently don't have a timeline on when they will offer a MobiTV app for the iPhone.

There is an App Store app called TELEVISION (catchy name, that).

App store link:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=299871806&mt=8

Read about it there. Only works with wifi, and only in about 8 countries, and no Vietnamese channels that I can see. Still its interesting.

I have not tried this app. Its mostly just an aggregation service providing links to existing broadcast sources.

Most other internet capable phones get cached copies of a web page rather than the actual webpage.

Not "cached". The phrase is more like "pre-crunched" in the case of the Opera Mini or Skyfire browsers. (Cutting down picture data size is a good idea for mobile devices.)

In any case, most other smartphones (Nokia, WM, RIM, Samsungs, etc) have browsers that get the actual webpage. They often have multiple choices for browsers, depending on what you like to do most. Some full mobile browsers include Opera, the new IE6 mobile, and the mobile port of Firefox.

As for http://vietnamlive.tv, on a WM phone the Skyfire browser plays the TV shows.

Flash video capability would be very useful on the iPhone.
