iPhone Screen constantly stays lit

I just got my iPhone 3G yesterday and all was working great. Stayed up late last night dl'ing free and paid apps from the Apple Store. Now today the screen constantly stays lit (unless I power the phone off) and drains the battery in about 4 hours. I checked the settings and can't find anything having to do with a backlight timer function or anything. What may be the problem? Should I take the phone back?

What is considered a need or want is in the eye of the beholder.

Why do you need to have Auto-Lock for the iPhone?

So the screen turns off automatically after a designated period of time without having to select the sleep/wake button to turn the screen each off and every time. If you don't need or want to use the auto-lock feature, you don't have to use it - turn it off.

And you can turn the screen off without using auto-lock (which turns the screen off automatically after a designated period of time with various options) by selecting the sleep/wake button to turn the screen off which can be used with auto-lock enabled also.

I suggest you spend a little time and read the iPhone's user guide before coming to a user to user help forum announcing what you think is stupid especially when you don't know what you are speaking about.

The only app that can run in the background with the iPhone is the Mail application - checking for new messages or via Push access. If any and all apps were allowed to run in the background with the iPhone locked, the battery would be drained in short order even with the just the screen off.

If this is what you need or want and if a very important need or want, you need to switch back to using a "normal" phone that provides the same - for use as a remote for VLC and Squeezebox.

I think we misunderstand each other.
I don't wanna use auto-lock, but when I disable it, the screen never goes out. I have read the manual, but I can't find a solution for this problem.

I use the phone as a remote for VLC and Squeezebox. This is why I don't want it to lock after a few minutes, but at the same time, I don't wanna leave the screen on all the time, because it drains the power.

In addition to Mail... SMS and the Phone app, run in the background.

Safari and the iPod app also stay running until another app requests enough memory to cause them to shut down.

That assumes they're actually doing something behind the scenes. An app that's "running in the background" isn't necessarily taking up CPU time (e.g. Safari), just RAM.

What I provided regarding apps "running in the background" was not correct. Of course the phone and SMS "apps" run in the background, and it is possible to play music with the iPod while the screen is off or with the iPhone locked.

This discussion is in reference to using the iPhone as a remote - with the remote function running in the background or behind the scenes for VLC and Squeezebox with the iPhone's screen off or with the iPhone locked.

Do you have an an answer for this - for the specific topic at hand? Can a 3rd party app run in the background, or more accurately, can a 3rd party app run actively in the background performing the designated tasks for the app while the iPhone's screen is off or when the iPhone is locked?

I think not, which is what this person wants.
