Are you referring to the lock icon displayed on the iPod screen when the hold switch is on? Or are you referring to the padlock icon displayed at the bottom of the iTunes screen when your ipod is connected?
My Itunes is fine. The Ipod itself will not come out of lock mode. I have tried everything, but I cannot get the IPOD to come out of lock mode.
I'm just wondering if you've found a solution to your problem regarding being unable to unlock your iPod? Unfortunately I seem to have the same problem. I am sort of a newbie with iPods, so I'm not exactly sure if I've tried every way to fix it, but any input on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
I've retored several times...I have a lock icon on the screen, it will not turn on when not conneted to my usb. What do I do? I've only used it a few times, my company bought it for me last January. HELP!!
have u pluged in ur ipod onto itunes?... did that make sense?
I am in the same boat. I used the Apple Replacement Program for my 15Gig ipod. They replaced it in record time. But after charging it and loading up my music - it has locked up with the lock icon forever present. Also. If left unconnected to the computer it shuts off and won’t come on unless connected to the powerbook. Nothing works. Not the updater, resetting, using any of Apple troubleshooting pages. It is only a week old. Anyone have any ideas?
I have the same problem also! but the thing is i accidently dropped my ipod on the hold switch (hehe). So i think that the switch that slides back and forth is messed up, but it makes sense to open it up and put it back into place. My warranty is up because i have had a 3rd gen ipod for a year and a half so when i called in for repair they said they couldnt cover me. So i guess i have to open it up. If you find out any more info, let me know, please!!!!!!! i love my ipod!!
I just got a hand-me-down gift iPod with the controls as four buttons above the wheel. 15G. It worked fine when I go tit. I installed Griffin FM transmitter software and also updated the iPod when prompted by iTunes. I wanted to transfer my music to it when all of a and i tseemd to be doing it auto even though I had srt manually in the prefs. I stopped the transfer of a zillion songs by clicking the x in the window displaying the "updating iPod". Now the library is all grey and the padlock in the iTunes window will not go away. what can I do? what did I do? arrggghh
The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manually managing your songs.
Make sure you've done this.

Yesterday was the second time in as many months that I was "locked" out. As with the first time it happened(jan06)the lock icon and play indicator are present, and you(I)CAN NOT perform ANY action, other than just waiting until the battery fully discharges,at which time you are able to re-charge and then you're good to go. Has anyone found a CURE?

The wife came home today with the same problem...
The iPod was workign fine on the way to work. She put it in her purse on the way into the building, gets to her desk, pulls it out and slides the "HOLD" toggle over and the lock icon remains on... A bunch of toggle-sliding, button mashing, swearing and a full restore later and there's still that pesky lock icon on the screen. If I press and hold the "Menu" and Center Buttons, nothing happens...
It's a 3rd generation scroll wheel iPod if that helps... shrug

i've tried formatting/resetting everything but still stuck on hold! how do i get back off i-Pod?
I just gave up, DHL'd my (8/05)60gb video pod back to Apple. Not only did it freeze up,but it also caused my pc and lap top to freeze while I was connected to i-tunes.
I didn't know what else to do and after speaking with one of their agents we came to the above conclussion, at least for diagnostics. To all others, Good Luck
