I have the same problem. I bought my mini in March and never had a problem until this week when I tried to sync. Same symptoms as described by you. I guess it has something to do with iTunes 4.7. I installed update dated 11/15/04 but it doesn't make a difference. I reset my iPod mini and erased everything on it but iTunes and the iPod freeze up after a few songs. I can't use my iPod any more!!!! I'm very frustrated.

I just learned in another discussion treat that disconnecting iSight will help. I disconnected my iSight and was able to sync without a problem. If you have an iSight try disconnecting it. I never had a problem with iSight and iPod mini before I upgraded to iTunes 4.7 so there is something wrong that Apple needs to fix but in the meantime this might solve your problem.

Am having eaxactly the same problem with my wife's iPod Mini - have wiped the iPod disk 4 times and even zeroed it. Then started afresh each time with the new iPod updater restoring to factory settings - always freezes immediately that it tries to copy songs (although it works fine in target disk mode).

All further help gratefully appreciated - will try iSight trick now. Thanks. W

GENIUSES! After 2 days of trying and reading MacOSXhints, MacNN and sudry others (including an interesting excursion through the iPod debug menu - see here http://www.finseth.com/parts/ipod.html) you guys solved it.

Thank you.

Apple - please note this really annoying bug as my wife's music library has had to be deleted and reinstalled in the quest for the answer and this is bound to annoy your fans. Thanks for the iPod in the first place, though.

William,

I'm having the same problems with my mini ever since I went to iTunes 4.7 and the latest update for the firmware. What did you do to fix the issue? Mine is transferring music very slowly, and my PowerBook doesn't want to acknowledge the mini half the time... Very annoying. It was working perfect before this darn update came out.

For me the solution was:

1. Remove the iSight camera from rear firewire port
2. Erase the iPod using Disk Utility
3. It will show up as a mounted disk image on the desktop when this is done
4. Use the latest iPod Firmware Updater to Restore the factory settings
5. Follow any instructions on screen.
6. Unplug it, replug and it will launch iTunes and ask if you want to register your iPod
7. Rename it to what it was called before (or something different - it doesn't matter)
8. Then control click on it in iTunes and go to Update (if it hasn't started automatically after the naming procedure).

It should now transfer songs at normal speed and be ready for use. However, this seems to be a work around and does remove the bug that must be in the works following the update to iTunes 4.7

If you do not have iSight and you still have this problem then I am sorry to say I do not have a solution for you at the moment.

Good luck, all.

I'm having the same problem, and have no iSight. I haven't had time to really experiment, but the USB connector had no problem copying songs one at a time, even large files, classical performances. I see its been a few days since any post and no comments from apple - any question of some interference with firewire function generally? I had problems mounting a firewire external drive after installing 4.7. Ran disk utility of course, no problems.

Well, I'm thinking the fault lies in our computers, not our minis, dear Brutus. Can't fix the iTunes freeze problem on my pismo, crashes if I try to transfer a group of song files, works fine transferring one by one manually. Firewire drives and burner work just fine off the same port. Just took the time to try the same transfer from my Ti with 4.7, and transferred a whole CD as a playlist without a hitch.
Either the mini likes Beck, or there's a hook in the program on the Pismo. I'm going to reinstall 4.7 on the Pismo later and see what happens, but I won't be worrying about the ipod itself.
