No, I don't think thats normal. I don't know why that happens to your iPhone, though.

Not quite understanding what you did, but if this is the sequence of events:

1) set an alarm
2) turn the iPhone OFF by holding down the sleep button and then sliding the red Off slider.
3) the alarm never goes off

that's normal for the iPhone (although it seems many other phones behave differently). The red Off slider is really truly totally off.

If you just put the phone to sleep with the sleep button on the top, then yes, it should wake up when the alarm goes off.

If the phone is off, the alarm won't go off -because the phone is off.

If you want the alarm to go off, just put the phone to sleep.

When you go to bed, go to settings>sounds and turn off the new e-mail and text notifications.

Engage the silent switch - the alarm will still sound, but the mail notifications will not (I do this every night).

When you go to sleep, put the phone in airplane mode and the alarm will ring but you won't be bothered by people who aren't sleeping during the night.

You can go into Settings > Sounds and under the Silent heading, set Vibrate to OFF. That will stop it from vibrating when the silent switch in engaged.

i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, spend the $10 for an alarm clock and turn off your phone at night. you've spent at least $200 on the phone, i'm sure a $10 alarm clock is within your budget.

oh, you're travelling? i've yet to stay at a hotel that does not provide an alarm clock and/or a wake up call.
