Using Image Capture with HP scanner

I have just bought an HP F2280 printer/scanner/copier.

Printing works fine, directly and shared over Airport (MacBook Pro -> Airport -> iMac -> USB -> Printer), and scanning works fine on the iMac with the supplied HP software. I can also scan from Photoshop using "Import" - "HP Scan Pro (TWAIN)".

However, for some reason I cannot scan from Image Capture. It says "No Image Capture device connected" even though it does list HPScanPro in its device browser. It's under "TWAIN Data sources': 'HPScanPro'. There's a strange tiny blue-gray cross icon under 'Kind' and a 'Use TWAIN UI' button in the 'Use TWAIN UI' column (?). The button does not appear to do anything.

The reason I want to be able to use Image Capture is because I want to share the scanner with my laptop over Airport. If Image capture can use it on the iMac it should be able to share it with Image Capture on the laptop, allowing me to scan from the laptop over Airport. But if it doesn't even work on the iMac directly...

Any tricks I should try?

There's a 'HPScanPro.ds' folder in "Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources', so I really don't see what could still be missing for Image Capture to use it.

Hi.

Just to let you that I'm having the exact same problem.
I also want to be able to share the scanner on the all-in-one with my other 2 macs, but no luck.

It's really strange that Image Capture cannot see that there's a scanner there.

if you eventually find a way, please don't forget to share it here. 🙂
(Of course I'll do the same )

Take care

Hi.

I have another scanner, an Epson Perfection 3200 Photo that is shared under Image Capture just fine.

But this HP one, is becoming a real trouble maker.
I tried both with and without the hp driver (always restarting my Mac).
I also went to HP downloads to be certain that I was using the last version of the driver, but still no luck.

So my advice for those thinking on doing the same?
Buy an Epson!

I have within the past hour spoken with HP Canada technical support (which turns out to be the same phone number as for HP US).

The person I spoke to was supposed to be a Mac support person. He did not seem to be at all familiar with Macs. He did not know what Image Capture is.

He tried to tell me that HPScanPro.ds which the HP Installer for my new HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One installs into */Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources* is not HP software.

His final answer was “We do not support Image Capture.”

The +*Mac support*+ person’s lack of Mac knowledge, combined with HP’s automated voice recognition system that didn’t work, a 15 minute wait to be put on hold for another five minutes, only to get a phone connection so bad that the only thing I could do was hang up and make another trip through the non-functional voice recognition system, followed by another 8 minute wait to be put on hold for another two minutes, makes my phone support experience with HP among the very worst I have ever had.

Just read about your problems with HP Scanners and Mac OSX.

I've installed my new HP Photosmart C6380 via Wifi on my iMac running with Leopoard, printing and scanning with the included HP Software is fine....but:

I have the same problem with image capture but I even cannot use the scanner in Photoshop, iPhoto, iWorks and all other twain compatible appclications. I have installed the latest HP drivers and the printer is a brand new modell of 2008. I've searched for days now to find a solution and would be gratefull for any ideas...

Thanks in advance
Steffen

PS: Does anybody know what the "Scan Utility" is for? I can't even open this HP application (delivered with HP driver disc).

Hi Stef

based on the answer given by Andrew a couple of post above we might implide that the TWAIN data source is not compliant with any application trying to use it and not just with image capture

so maybe you will have to wait for the new version of this data source --

concerning the scan utility, it does not work for me either -- maybe if just part of any of the other application in the HP suite

lets hope Andrew comes back and clarify this issue

cheers

Andrew, I have a HP C7180 All in One on a Mac Mini. I have installed and reinstalled Leopard and the HP drivers etc... When scanning using HP's Photosmart software included with the driver download, sometimes the scan is perfect, and other times it is distorted or only partially scanned.

I can actually put the paper on the glass and not move it. Then scan using Photosmart the exact same way several times and it gives me different results.

I have yet to be able to find why it will work sometimes and other times not. I have tried using GIMP as well and have the same results.

This is frustrating as the printer claims to have full Mac support. Are there any new drivers coming out or anything I can do to fix it?

As a side note, if I plug in a USB drive directly to the printer, it will scan to it perfectly everytime. Besides the inconvenience, the biggest problem is that it only scans straight to the USB drive as a jpg. The images must be .tif or equivalent quality for me. Thank you for any help! 🙂
