So aslmanager taking 99% and Console.app hangs when started

anybody know why aslmanager needs 99% of CPU and 2+ GB footprint?

I have been having this problem as well for a few days. The aslmanager is currently up to 3.76GB use of virtual memory. I want to try Haje's suggestion but I don't understand what "sudo" means. I have already trashed the asl.db but the problem is still occurring. Could someone please give me more detailed information on how to fix?

PastorMatt - "sudo" means "Super User Do" its a short command to tell the machine to do a function as the SuperUser (Administrator, if you come from the Windows world). It's basic Unix stuff, and you can look up all sorts of information on any UNIX/Linux/BSD board. Remember, the underbelly of OS X is UNIX 🙂

Still - I'm curious. What do we do with the temp folder created on the desktop once we're done with re-pointing? Also, is there a potential by doing this patchwork "fix" to really screw up future updates that might fix this issue properly?

i had the same problem and rebooting didnt help. other than the asl manager there were also a couple of other similiar processes that appeared to be hung. i had stopped my time machine backup which had began "preparing" but it just never quit and seemed to be caught up "stopping backup"

i saw the fixes mentioned previously here and on other places in the web, but didnt want to use the sudo command. what worked for me was a little less intrusive. i shut down the computer. i then unplugged it from the wall and took out the battery. with the battery out, i held down the power button for 10- 15 sec and then put the battery back in and restarted the computer. i havent had a problem since.

i also, after, ran all the maintenance scripts

This is not the same issue, but I wonder whether it is related. Sometimes my computer will be in the middle of starting up, it freezes and it will hang forever. I have to restart my computer and hope that it won't freeze on the next reboot. I have a suspicious feeling that it is attributed to this aslmanager. When I look at the Console after rebooting, I see this error if the computer starts (it's one of the errors posted last):

8/26/09 11:17:58 PM com.apple.aslmanager[118] aslmanager(118) malloc: * error for object 0x10f940: double free
8/26/09 11:17:58 PM com.apple.aslmanager[118] * set a breakpoint in malloc errorbreak to debug
8/26/09 11:17:58 PM com.apple.aslmanager[118] aslmanager(118) malloc: * error for object 0x10f940: double free
8/26/09 11:17:58 PM com.apple.aslmanager[118] * set a breakpoint in malloc errorbreak to debug
8/26/09 11:17:58 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.aslmanager[118]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault

So aslmanager taking 99% and Console.app hangs when started
