iCal Events Vanished - Cannot Quit iCal

I loaded up iCal today and all of my events had disappeared. I can click forward and backward in time, and still, nothing. The mini-calendar in the lower left shows January 2001. There are no calendars on the left, even though I have five or six. When I try to quit iCal the program just hangs, and I have to force quit the software.

Reminders are still popping up, and my iPhone still has the events, so I think they're there, but not visible... Or something.

I've tried grabbing the calendar folder via Time Machine from a week ago, but it didn't improve. I've resynched with the iPhone, but again, no events.

How can I get my calendars back, any suggestions?

Solved.

Level 2 had me delete iCal and it's .Bom file and then D/L the Combo update for 10.5.6
Well, I did that, and it reinstalled iCal, but not well. Black icon and other such issues.
So, I deleted iCal TOTALLY and reinstalled it from the set up disc (Optional installs) and all my events are back and with the correct colors and icons.
So for now, things seem to have been fixed.

Same story here, though not on all of our machines. The problem affects a MacBook Pro syncing iCal via mobileme. The following procedure did not fix:

delete ical.app
reboot
empty trash for good measure
install ical from optional installs - should say that it is going to install rather than upgrade
reboot for good measure

The console shows this error repeatedly:

iCal[179] *Assertion failure in -[CoreTask OutlineView _uncachedRectHeightOfRow:], /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-949.43/TableView.subproj/NSTableView.m:1574
iCal[179] rowHeight must be > 0
iCal[179] rowHeight must be > 0

Tried changing /Library/Caches/Metadata/iCal to NOT.iCal in case cached data was the problem. No luck. Same with /Users/$USER/Library/Caches/com.apple.ical.

I then moved /Users/$USER/Library/Calendars to NOT.Calendars. After doing that, iCal "upgraded calendars", resync'd (sanc?) with mobileme, and worked.

Of the log file entries that went by during the last step, the following seemed interesting, though might not be related as they seem more to do with sync:

iCalExternalSync[547] Lock Contention on CalendarStore Initialization

(lots of Failed to look up record with Id: blahblahblah)

ConflictResolver[556] Ignoring exception NSObjectNotAvailableException trying to remove lock file: Can't remove existing lock for /Users/$USER/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/conflicts

There is a semi-known issue related to To Do's created on an IMAP server (e.g., Gmail), the issue can result in this behavior, and also hangs in Mail.app.

If you created a To Do item within Mail.app, under an IMAP account, and your Mail.app still works:
Quit iCal (Cmd+Q)
Delete the To Do entry from Mail.app-Reminders-To Do-[your IMAP account]
Quit Mail.app, then start it up again just to be sure it's really gone
Open iCal

If iCal is working and Mail.app isn't, then delete the To Do from iCal.

/var/log/system.log will have messages similar to the ones posted by tdelporto, and in this thread:

I'm having the same issue. No suggested solutions have worked either. It seems to be a sync issue. If I delete the content from the Calendars folder under User/Library/Calendars and launch iCal, everything comes back as on MobileMe automatically and all seems fine, until you quit iCal and re-launch and all goes back to no event listing again.

Any fixes that work would be appreciated. C'Mon Apple, this is not good enough. Calendars are heavily relied upon for people to function in a professional capacity. Guess I'll go back to a pen and paper diary until there is a fix....

For me it is definitely related to the "to-do list" integration between iCal and mail.app.

I was having the same issue described in the title. Furthermore, iCal would become unresponsive. I then upgraded to 10.5.6 and everything seemed back to normal. Until, that is, I added a to-do item using mail.app. At that point, iCal became unresponsive again. My to-do's disappeared as well as my calendars. I am going to delete the to-do's in mail.app and see if that fixes things. I am using a mobile me account which I believe to be basically an IMAP account.

My iCal is completely unusable now. I cannot backup the database (when I select the backup menu, the window to save the back up flashes for a minute on the screen, then disappears). This only happened after the upgrade to 10.5.6 - iCal worked OK before.

I do not want to delete all of my To-Dos, because I have been using iCal for years, and I just do not have the time.

The only reason I bought 10.5 was for the To-Do integration with iCal (I was quite happy with Tiger). And, now, iCal doesn't work!

I have gone back to a paper calendar, something I have not used in years. Apple - YOU NEED TO FIX THIS!!!!
