Windows and iTunes won't recognize iPod 80gb classic
This just occurred today. Whenever I plug in my iPod 80gb classic, Windows pops-up with a message saying the unknown hardware has a problem and cannot detect it. iTunes won't recognize the iPod either. However, when I connect my iPod to a different computer, it recognizes it and it works just fine. On the computer that doesn't recognize it, I have tried restarting the computer and the iPod, I tried reinstalling iTunes and have went through the 5 R's. Nothing has worked on the old computer, which is the main one I use. This is kinda inconvenient since I just got 2 iTunes gift cards and would like to put some stuff on my iPod, haha. Thanks to whoever can help me out.
Yeah, it is. Like I said, both my iPods won't even be recognized on my main computer, but on my other computer they both work just fine. Windows always pops up with the aforementioned "USB device malfunctioning" notification, it won't even read the iPod as a removable storage device or disk device. It's really weird and really aggravating.
I am having the same problem and can't figure it out and can't find anyone to help. I can't sync my ipod's (I have 2 also)to ITUNES. There used to be a sync icon on their site and since they changed their format, it's gone. I can pay them $40 to install software to figure it out if I want to but I think Apple should provide the answer for free.
Have you tried uninstalling the IPOD driver, unplugging your IPOD then plugging it back in?
1) Plug your IPOD into your computer
2) Press Windows key and Pause Break key
3) Click the " Hardware " tab
4) Click " Device Manager "
5) Go down all the catagories and look for something with IPOD in it or Apple.
6) Right click, uninstall
7) when it has uninstalled, unplug your IPOD then plug it back in again
A corrupted piece of music disabled my wife's iPod.Tried syncing it at home and also here on my work computer with the same results...sometimes not recognized by iTunes, sometimes I would get the dreaded I/O error message. It was still under warranty so I sent back to Apple - they returned it citing no problems with the device. When I tried to sync it upon arrival from Apple, again same results.
With iTunes off and the iPod connected, I had to reformat the iPod. (My Computer>right click Manage>then click on Disk Management.) When the iPod shows up in the right hand screen, right click on it and then format. (This will delete everything on the device but if you cant read it what good is it anyway?) You will get a message that the format cannot be completed. Ignore this message. Disconnect the Ipod.
With the iPod disconnected, start iTunes. Break your library up into separate playlists like genre, artist, whatever, just so you have it broken up into smaller groups. When you sync later your going to want to sync one playlist at a time until you find the offending group. When finished, leave iTunes running then go ahead and connect your iPod. iTunes will tell you it has found an iPod in recovery mode. Go ahead and restore. When completed, your iPod should restart and be recognized by iTunes. If it does not, physically unplug it then replug it. Do not sync your entire library. Sync only one playlist - then check your iPod. Continue until you find the playlist upon which the I/O error rears its ugly head. Make note of which one that is...then start over with the whole process again.
This may not work for everyone and it sure is a **** of a lot of trouble. ABBA's Greatest Hits seems to be the culprit here. I deleted it from both my computers and everything synced successfully.
Thankfully, I did not try the suggestions that told me to reformat my iPod, haha. I was going to go into safe mode and try and restack my USB ports, but as soon as I unplugged all the other USB devices from my Computer, and plugged my iPod in, Windows recognized it. It was a miracle, haha. Hope this helps whoever else was having this issue.
I wish it were that simple for me, though some others in different forums feel that Service Pack 3 might be the culprit. Others have had very similar problems with ipods and other mp3 devices. Does anyone have anything to say about that possibility?
