Kernel panic after 10.5.6 download

Hey,

I've been having a problem since I tried to load 10.5.6 through the software updater. The update froze while verifying and then restarted. When it restarts I get a kernel panic and the apple light comes on and the computer makes noises. I restarted it over and over and get a kernel panic on the startup screen. I can get in if I start in safe mode and then unplug the computer and turn it back on which lets me log in normally with no kernel panic. It says its running 10.5.6 but it isnt listed as a download in software updater and there is no evidence I downloaded it other than my system profiler saying its running 10.5.6. Also, limewire no longer works because of a kernel panic and when I try to open anything I download a screen pops up saying to restart causing a kernel panic.

Is there any way I can get the computer back to 10.5.5 or re-download 10.5.6? I dont have a startup disk and Im not mac literate.....Im just trying to find a way to fix it without having to wipe the memory.

Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Are you sure it's a kernel panic? Does the screen get dark with words in many languages saying you have to restart?
If so check out these links- it's probably RAM, although since you are running limewire, anything is possible since you have given access to anyone to use it. IMO, limewire is malware, along with all other bit-torrent stuff.
Kernel panic info:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
http://www.index-site.com/kernelpanic.html

I would also download the 10.5.6 update manually from here:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/
and reapply it.

You will need the startup DVD no matter what, so if you lost it, call Apple and get a replacement. Their contact info is at the bottom right of these screens. Without the Leopard DVD there is little you can do.

BTY, your memory (RAM) is "wiped" each time you restart. I think you meant to say harddisk.
However, an Archive & Install does not remove any existing apps you your HD. It only restores the system files to those on the DVD.

It's a kernel panic. It has a bunch of writing in the background and then has the screen that says to restart on top of it. The issues with limewire and downloading started after the kernel panic. I think what it is is that when i was loading 10.5.6, the download crashed and I got "half" of 10.5.6 on to my computer and its freaking out.

I have the same problem, since updating to 10.5.6 i get a kernel panic when booting, i can boot into safe mode and then restart into normal mode, at the same time my macbook won't shut down properly, if i click shut down from the apple menu then it will shut down and the screen goes black but it won't properly turn off, if i shut the lid the light on the front turns on. My computer also won't sleep and doesn't have any sound. I downloaded the 10.5.6 combo update but when i try to mount the disk image i get a kernel panic.
Any help please.

I thought I had downloaded the 10.5.6 update successfully, BUT I'm having a kernel panic every 20 minutes since then. Each time it happens, I've been watching .avi files in QuickTime Pro. My kernel panic looks a little different, perhaps because I'm on a PPC G4? It's looks like white text across the screen with black behind the text.

Before today, I had kernel panics every few days or so, I suspected it was caused by the installation of several Adobe Air apps (Twhirl & TweetDeck) as I hadn't had a kernel panic since a clean install of Leopard, UNTIL after the Adobe Air apps were installed. I can live with a kernel panic every few days, but now after the 10.5.6 update a kernel panic every 20 minutes is beyond ridiculous.

Disk Utility's Disk Verify says everything is fine, but permission repair gives me several warnings that I have no clue what to do about:

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/setregion" has been modified and will not be repaired.

What's the best course of action?

I havent figured out how to fix it other than getting a new battery that works and never turning off the computer lol.......i can log in if i boot up in safe mode and then unplug the computer and then restart it....it works fine then but if i try to download the combo update to try to fix it it crashes when its mounting the image and causes a kernel panic

Don't feel bad people, I think Apple is caring allot less about the Mac and worrying more about the Iphone and Ipods these days. I upgraded to 10.5.6 and my first generation MacBook that hardly ever gives me problems is kernel panicking itself to death. My 1st generation quad 3Ghz Pro is now kernel panicking itself to death (both computers giving same kernel panic code). I have about had it with Apple and I am considering heading back towards Microsoft. Apple has proven they can not do any better than Microsoft. It just works, whatever. I wish you all the best of luck.

hey - I had updated my 17" MBP to 10.5.6 via the software update recently, and had similar problems to what everyone is saying. I found an interesting issue - in the process of archiving and installing from the Leopard retail DVD, my machine would have a (kernel) panic attack only when the disc was in the drive - even booting up wouldn't get past the grey logo screen until I forced the DVD out at boot.
Clearing PRAM and NVRAM were only temporary fixes, and regular CDs and DVDs seem ok - it is the Leopard disc only that takes down the system.

hopefully this gets addressed. I will try to somehow reinstall and apply the 10.5.5 update and see if the DVD continues to crash the system.

good luck to all

I've had this problem on my mac book after every reboot. But not any of my other macs. The only way I have found to fix this is to re-boot in safe mode. Then re-boot normally and everything is OK, until I re-boot again. If you look at the mac help page on safe boot there is a bit of a give away

"Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). Restarting recreates this cache. A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update."

I hope Apple will fix this in there next update.

I hope it's fixed in the next update too! I think i can deal with the kernel panics by starting up in safe mode and restarting but i have the problem of having no sound, my macbook will make a start up sound but then once started up there is no sound icon in the bar at the top of the screen and whenever i try to adjust the volume i get the normal volume box but with the circle with a line through it. In system preferences it claims that there are no inbuilt speakers, which i know are working because my computer will make the start up sound. Does anybody else have this problem? (i know it's a different problem from the rest of the discussion).
