Volume controls on new headphones not working

The volume controls on my new Apple in ear headphones are not working with my 4th Generation Nano. The play/pause and forward/backward controls work just fine but not the volume. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Does your Nano have software version 1.0.3 or later? See this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3310 footnote 1.

In that case, I don't know. Defective? If you are near an Apple Store, take them and your iPod and have them checked.

Turns out they were defective. Local Apple Retail replaced no problem.
