PC freezes when iPod Touch is fully charged

Has anyone experienced this problem before? : When my iPod Touch is connected over USB to a PC and it's (almost) fully charged, all of a sudden the entire PC freezes. Moving the mouse or typing anything on the keyboard has no effect; everything is completely frozen. The only thing I can do is reboot the PC. Also, when this happens, the iPod wakes up (it shows its "Slide to unlock"-screen). Apart from that, the iPod itself still functions normally.

I didn't have this problem until recently so I'm suspecting it's either a bug in one of iTunes' background services (since iTunes isn't running when this problem occurs) or the iPod's firmware. I've got a first-generation iPod Touch with firmware 2.2 and iTunes 8.0.2.20, running on Windows XP Pro SP3. Also, I connect my iPod to the PC using a universal dock (current model).

I have already tried reinstalling iTunes and tried using different USB ports, but that didn't make any difference. Currently I'm trying to see whether it helps to connect the iPod to the PC without the dock. I'll also try to see what it gives if I am running iTunes whilst charging.

I've also seen some forum posts elsewhere with similar issues, but none of these are of much help. ( http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1067146 , http://forums.ilounge.com/archive/index.php/t-162474.html and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=795077)

Does anyone have some more info on this problem? Thanks!

Hmm, I just noticed something. The iPod also seems to randomly wake up when it wasn't even connected to the computer (or a USB power brick). I bet if it were connected to my computer, it would completely freeze.

So what I'm getting at is this: In my first post of this thread I said that when the PC suddenly completely froze, the iPod also woke up (, but continues to behave normally). Now I've figured that the iPod can also wake up even when it's not connected to the computer. So... , I'm thinking that this random waking up is the cause of the PC suddenly freezing. And because the random waking up can happen even if it's not connected, the computer is not the one to blame. Therefore, it's the iPod's fault! More precisely, it's a bug in firmware 2.2, because I don't recall having any problems on firmware 2.1 or older versions.

In conclusion, I should try and revert back to an older firmware version. If my guess was right, the problem should be gone and then I should probably report the bug to Apple (Anyone know where I can do that? if at all possible...).

Reinstalling Windows' USB drivers didn't help, so there's only one thing left: downgrading iTunes. I've got some hope that this will finally do the trick, as I've read some news posts about BSODs and other sorts of issues with the latest versions of the "Apple Mobile Device Service" that come with iTunes 8. ( http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=2270)

Now I've reverted back to iTunes 7.7 (which is the earliest version that supports the AppStore according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunesversionhistory)

I've finally made some progress in solving this pesky problem. I have now reverted back to iTunes 7.7. If I leave all Apple-related background services enabled (Mobile Apple Device Service, Bonjour service, iPod-service, AppleSyncNotifier, iTunesHelper and QTTask), the problem still exists.
Once I disable all services though, the problem is gone. This was also true for iTunes 8, but the difference is this: Even with all those services disabled with iTunes 7.7, the iPod Touch is still able to get its power from the computer. For some odd reason, this isn't true for iTunes 8.

If I can now pinpoint which service causes the PC to freeze, which hopefully is something iTunes doesn't need to function properly, the problem is fixed. (or at least I'll know who is causing all the trouble...) For now, I'm already happy that my iPod can charge without freezing my machine... 🙂

You're right about the random thing; at first I thought it only happened when the iPod was fully charged, but it has also happened on random occasions...

Anyhow, I actually managed to get my iPod Touch (1G) charging again, without freezing the computer. The downside is that I can't sync.

What I've done is this:
* I have moved back to the latest version of iTunes (8.0.2.20). I also have the latest firmware on the iPod Touch (2.2).
* I have disabled the following Apple services/startup-programs: iTunesHelper, AppleSyncNotifier and Apple Mobile Device
To do this: Go to Start > Run,
then type "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK,
then go to the "Services" tab, remove the checkmark on "Apple Mobile Device",
then go to the "Startup" tab, remove the checkmarks on "iTunesHelper" and "AppleSyncNotifier",
then click OK and you'll be asked to restart the computer.
* When the computer has restarted, a window'll be shown that says you've modified your configuration... You'll probably want to check the checkbox in this window; otherwise this window'll pop up every time the computer restarts...

Now your iPod Touch should be able to safely charge without freezing the computer. When you start iTunes now, you'll get the message that says the iPod won't work because the Apple Mobile Device-service hasn't started.

I have disabled this Apple Mobile Device because I'm quite positive it's the cause of all this freezing. If you do need to sync your iPod, it's possible to enable the Apple Mobile Device-service for a while, and then disable it again.
Just do the following to start it:
* Go to Start > Run
* Type "services.msc" (without the quotes) and click OK
* In this new window, look for the "Apple Mobile Device" entry in the list; double-click it.
* Change "Startup type" from "Disabled" to "Manual"; click "Apply".
* Click the "Start" button in this window to start the Apple Mobile Device-service.
* Click OK and then close the "Services" window.
* iTunes will now recognize the iPod Touch again, but the you'll be at risk of freezing the computer...

I'm so happy someone else is having the same problem as me!

I have tried uninstalling ALL Apple software and the PC won't freeze, but then I can't synch (there's non-iTunes apps, but they need the service). I tried installing with the ipod connected and as soon as the installer gets to 'installing services', it crashes.

I tried other ipods and it freezes, I tried my ipod on other machines and no crash. I even have the same thing where it might not crash instantly, but once the ipod goes back to 'sleep' and I see my wallpaper, it freezes.

I spent a good amount of tiem narrowing it down to the Apple software on my box (not my Pc or ipod). Do you nkow if we need ALL of those services running? Is there a way to use an older version of MobileMe? The problem is of course I can't add more songs....and I desperately want to!!!

Thanks all,

Jesus, I thought that my PC packed in or it was my iPod. It was working fine yesterday. Today i woke up, i thought to myself, i will switch my monitors around today.. Then i plug in the iPod and BANG my PC is frozen... I thought it was because I switch monitors, but it still happened when i switched back to my old monitor.. Then i tried a system restore and its still buggered. I can't even charge mine, everytime i plug it in, about 3 seconds later my whole PC freezes. My friend also told me he was experiencing BSOD problems when he plugged his in. Can someone please get down to the bottom of this issue?!
