iPod Classic 160 GB Cannot Be Muted.

Why is it that I cannot mute my iPod Classic? I do not recall it being this way always. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

I was just made aware of this so I am not sure if it has always muted in the past but has changed. I don't know. I don't see a reason why it needs to be muted when it can easily be paused. It it's muted when it's playing then you will not be aware and that may cause the ipod to keep playing, wasting battery. I'm learning to just unplug my earbud from the iPod itself just so that It won't continue to play if I forget to press pause or it activates itself. I've experienced it where the battery was in the red and I wanted to listen to it.
