Thank you, Jared,

Let me look at this and get back to you. Another non-related set of questions that I'm curious about.

When you uninstalled the iPod Updater and iTunes did you still have the iPodService running, did you still have the C:\Program Files\iPod\bin directory or did that get properly deleted? If you look in C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodServices.Resources, there's a .dll file right (and several folders for the different localized languages), what is the version number on the dll file -- the Properties dialog should tell you that?

Ok, Jared,

Your iPodService registry entries match mine. And this surprises me. Do you have the iPodService running in processes list in the task manager? If you right click on My Computer and select manage and select services from that dialog, is the iPodService service in the list of services installed on your system?

The error that y'all are getting is that the iPodService is not running (or if it running, it's corrupted).

If you go to C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodServices.exe, what version is this file?

I'm actually on my laptop now, but I checked and the registry entries match as well. As for your questions:

in 'C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.Resources' the iPodService.dll file is version 5.0.0.35.

iPodServices.exe is an installed service on both machines and it is always running in my processes list. The file version for it is 5.0.0.35.

As for uninstalling stuff, I haven't tried this, I just saw your request for the info, so I thought I would help you out. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you, Jared,

Because I could use all the help I could get...

If you've got a laptop where the iPod is fine next to a computer where the iPod is not fine, that's even more useful.

So, you have iPodService running as a process, but when you run iTunes it complains that the software isn't installed to talk to the iPod? Which is odd because that's the message that mostly means, iPodService not running.

There is a theory that this is some werid timing error while running the installer. If you stop the iPodService. (Right click My Computer, select Manage, Select Services and Application, Select Services, Find iPodService, stop it.) And then do a repair install on iTunes -- Add or Remove Programs, iTunes, Select Change/Remove, Make sure the Repair radio button is selected, hit OK.

Does that "fix" the iPodService Error problem?

If it doesn't I'm going to want you to compare a list of registry entries between your two computers.
