Samsung CLP-315 and Airport Express (prints then doesn't)

Hi:

I have a Samsung CLP-315 connected via USB to an Airport Express. I have the same problem that has been referred to in other posts that the printer works for a page or two and then it stops working, usually with a larger document being printed.

Firmware on Airport Express is 6.3 and I am using OS X 10.5.5

I have tried the workaround of adding the printer by using the IP address, through HP direct, but I always get the error "Network host '10.0.1.1' is busy; will retry in 10 seconds...".

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Have you seen this thread?

I've found that if you can't print, simply running the Airport Utility, selecting your printer and clicking on Manual setup clears up the problem for more printing... until it stops working again - then just repeat the process. I wrote a simple Applescript to do this automatically and it works pretty good. I don't know if the issue is with Apple or Samsung.

The following workaround was posted by the following user on another thread:

It worked great for me.

FYI if you have an older Airport base station (802.11g) the firmware downgrade does not work.
I found some help in a product review and so far it seems to be working on my system (APX Base 802.11g with 5.7 firmware and APE with firmware 6.3 and CLP-310 attached to the APE)
Here it is.

1. Install the drivers and printer
2. Plug the printer into the Airport and restart the airport.
3. Open system preferences and click Print & Fax
4. Select + to add another printer.
5. Choose IP at the top.
6. Under protocol select HP JetDirect
7. Under address use your airports IP address and specify port 9101 i.e. 10.0.1.1:9100 (the IP address is found on the main window of the Airport Utility)
8. Under name, name it anything you'd like.
9. Under print using, choose select a driver to use and pick your print driver. If the drivers flash up and go away, choose it again and quickly type the first few letters of the print driver. Now scroll and select it.
10. Click okay and test some prints. If it does not work, also follow the same steps, except try port 9101 instead of 9100.

This fixed it for my iMac and Samsung SCX-4200 printer connect to a time capsule.

Previous to this fix, I could print 1 job, then anything I tried to print thereafter would get stuck at somewhere between 6% to 24%. This is on my iMac Leopard (10.5.6). Interestingly, it looks like the printing daemon on the time capsule would get stuck in some weird state after that first successful job. It's just a theory based on the AirPort Utility -> Printers no longer showing any USB printer connect to the time capsule. Unplugging the USB cable, or cycling power on the printer did nothing to remedy the situation. Only a restart of the time capsule itself would get me back to the state where I could print one job again... and it would then die again.

Now my MBP which is still on Tiger (10.4.11) does not exhibit this problem at all. I can print all I want and the time capsule and it's connected printer are happy all day long.

In conclusion, this is a Leopard problem.

THANK YOU - this procedure works with my Samsung CLP-315 and Airport Express (version 6.3).

However, it only works with Port 9100 specified, and the "Share printer via WAN" option in the "Printer" section of the AirPort Utility must be activated.

With no port or port 9101, or the share option unchecked, I am only getting the "network host is busy, will retry" error.

I had the exact same problem with my Samsung CLP 315 and my Time Capsule.

I seem to have fixed it this way :

1- download & install the latest driver for the CLP 315

2- download & install the latest AirPort Utility (Apple-software)

3- after configuring AirPort Utility, close it & re-open

4- in AirPort Utility choose Manual Setup

5- in Summary click on the small arrow that appears on mouse-over left from / next to "USB Printers"

6- on the page that appears, change the name of the printer to the exact name you want to use for it on your Mac (and leave the "Share printers over the Internet using Bonjour blank) and click "Update"

7- go to System Preferences on your Mac, go to "Print & Fax" and "Add Printer" (the "+")

8- under the Default tab, select your Samsung CLP 315 (it will be listed exactly the way you've named it in your AirPort Utility, followed by the "Kind = Bonjour" info)

9- now your printer's Name, Location and Driver ("Print Using") will all be listed automatically

10- click "Add" and you can start using your Samsung-printer wirelessly through your Time Capsule

That seems to be all there is to it...

Good Luck!
