Well I found from someone else on another site Like Walmart online if you use the hold switch while playing or even without playing your ipod you will save your battery too I also found out if you turn off your shake feature and coverflow too that will help with the battery too from draining down as fast to me it seems to help a bunch also turn down your backlight feature too that helps too I know but it you want longer life on the battery this is what I have found and I only had my ipod very short time I got mine for christmas too I know it nice to have theses feature but they seems to drain your battery alot faster than normal I don't have charge my ipod up as much by doing this things on my ipod itself I hope this helps everyone here too o
I just received the 4th Gen Nano for Christmas and I fully charged it before using it. It was charged using all the proper connections while connected to my perfectly updated and plugged in Mac Book Pro. I've completely drained and recharged the battery about 10 times so far. I've done everything I could using the hold button while listening or while turned off, and I've turned off the shake feature.. because it sort of annoys me. So why the heck is my battery ONLY LASTING 3 HOURS!?
Are you just listening to music or are you watching videos?
The size and type of files you are using can effect battery life. The higher the quality/size of an audio file, the more juice it takes to play.
With default settings and listening to music encoded using default settings in iTunes, I get about 20 - 24 hours of play.

What apple means when they say 24 hours is that you get 24 hours playing MUSIC
for doing anything else on your ipod such as photos/video/games/ect the 24 hour rule does not apply
To turn cover flow off: settings > general > rotate
There are only two options: Cover flow, and off
I think that you should be able to set rotate to do other things. That would be a cool feature.

I say the same thing as ipodwhisperer, it all depends on what youre doing with it.
I have an ipod nano also, and the battery seems to work good for me.
Also, do you have energy saver on?
To turn Energy Saver on, Settings > Playback
And Backlight? Settings > General
Brightness? Settings > General

I bought 2 identical (other than color) 4th Gen Nanos for my 2 sons this holiday and one works just fine, but the other is having constant battery issues. When the defective unit is plugged in to a PC to charge/sync it syncs fine and within 5 mins, regardless of charge, says it is fully charged. Disconnect and start playing music and within 5 mins it is only showing half charged. Then within another 10 mins max, it says battery needs charged. It shows only a small sliver of charge left. So I plug it in again and within 5 mins again says it is fully charged. Before you say anything about the PC or cable, remember the other working 4th Gen uses the same exact cable and PC. I am hoping someone here can help me out with this one.

Update your iPod's firmware.
(Plug your iPod in, click on it in iTunes, and hit "Update."
Also, note that playing games, looking at photos, watching videos, using menus, etc. uses approximately 6-8 times the battery.
hey yea i had the same problem.. reset ur ipod to original settings, then reput ur stuff on it and plug it in the BACK usb port of ur computor and let it charge for 6-7 hours then just let it play it should last at least 24 hours starit.. but dont touch any buttons while ur letting it play the 1st time. if t dosent last call the support number and they will help u with the next step but this one worked for mine and it dint even last 1 full hour befor
I bought 2 nano's for my kids and one of the nano's battery is not holding a charge...I'm thinking that's the main prob with this devise and that's why nothing else will work. 😟
same problem here. the battery dies very quickly. my old ipod didnt do that but this one needs to be charged everynight. i think there is something wrong with the battery.
i did turn off the shuffle mode for ipod and that seemed to help.. the hold button works aswell
